Hi Kids - A bunch of news I expect I have missed. Some gear news on my end. Got a good deal on a used SX300.
Pics...
Some observations - It is bulky at 25 inches wide - but light at under 20 lbs. This came w/ a footswitch and it works perfectly. No clicking or gap at all switching between channels. The channel 3 is clean channel. Channels 1 & 2 are identical voice - except Ch 1 has a high gain boost, and Ch 2 has a "Blues Drive" switch that bumps the mids, and makes the gain a bit tamer.
One thing I noticed is this is a pretty bright amp - even with the presence off. On my amps my norm is to bump the treble, and the bass, and roll the mid's off slightly. With the SX I actually want to roll the treble back and bump the mids. So for a JCM-ish tone - Treble at 5, both mids & bass about 7, Gain about 6. I am finding to get that JCM tone the gain should not be over the top. It seems closest with Gain between 5 and 7. Back in the day Marshall's were way gainy - but compared to modern amps - Mesa Boogie, Krank, etc. - not that high gain if that makes sense. The SX is not a modeling amp - I am hearing that the SX has a voice of its own. but the effects are nice to have. I got a good Voxy tone by bumping the mid and putting gain between 3 to 4.
I engaged the Blues Drive on Ch 2, and bumped volume. The Blues drive gives you another amp imo. It really changes character of the amp. The first couple times I tried the blues drive I did not think it added much - but after adjusting volume it adds quite a bit to the amp. There is a bit of a mismatch between the SX300 at 100W and the WGS Retro 30 at 75W - but it seems to work. I really have to dial back the high gain channels to use it at the house. I think with volume at 3 - that is about the loudest I could use at the house.
It is a bit of an overkill for my needs - but I really, really like it and expect I will keep it.
