The game was scoreless early in the first period when Crosby skated just outside the Capitals' crease. Washington's Alex Ovechkin slashed Crosby along the upper body and Crosby slid awkwardly trying to maintain his balance when he collided with Niskanen, who had his stick raised.
 
Stick isn't even chest high. The whack from Ovechkin could have been easily called a slash but it wasn't that significant. The significant thing was that Sid was going fast and Ovechkin's FOOT hit Sid's FOOT which threw him off balance. Then, as Sid is going down, Niskanen puts his arms out in front of him. He's not even looking at Crosby so how can it be intent to injure? Ridiculous.

Anyone who thinks that is dirty simply just doesn't have any idea.

Sid has ALWAYS been reckless with his own body. I suppose to be at that level and to achieve what he has achieved and will continue to achieve he feels like he has to. The number of times he has flew into the boards and so on during games is unreal. But this incident was merely pro athletes going really fast and the two feet coming together to knock him off balance & subsequent collision...it is just circumstance.

You can tell that Niskanen isn't even looking at him but the look from in front of Niskanen shows that there was significant impact. Nasty but not intentional and just poor luck.
 
That post holds zero weight...

Players at that level are used to acting\reacting at fast speeds....

They know what they're doing..

They were also smashing Malkin around...

It's their only hope

I know we all pretty much have disdain for Sidney Crosby (or outright hate in some cases), but that's a shame. A blow to hockey as a whole.
I do wonder how long he'll be out for.
With his history, I wonder if he should be done for the year, just to be on the safe side for his CAREER and long-term health, vs a short-term respite in hopes the Penguins can continue another run at a cup.

I guess we'll see.

EDIT: Sheary on the Pens has a concussion, too. Though that one came from running into his own teammate.

I had put mine aside for the most part because he seemed to have changed a lot after coming back from his other concussion issues and then I did see a lot of that old stuff coming back toward the end of this season.

Definitely unfortunate but I couldn't have kept from making contact if I were in Niskanen's position and Kelly Ripa were in Crosby's - it's all happening at top speed and a lot of the actions are reflex.
