Unreal. I wonder how many times that move has been used. Seems pretty out of hand, but maybe it happens more than I know and it has not been much reported before. I would guess that is not the case though.

EDIT: It does say it is rarely used, but getting some numbers on it would be nice. Didn't find any numbers on its use with a quick google search.

OK, so the anti-immigration advocates keep citing the threat of rampant crime committed by immigrants as a huge issue & this is for the safety of 'Muricans.
I get using money as the carrot & stick to force the hand of the leadership in sanctuary cities seems like a smart tactic but I surprised that no one is outraged at the only actual truth in this whole debate; how do you make anyone safer by cutting funds for law enforcement? Get tough on immigrants in the name of safety or we're going to make you less safe? Now the PA state legislature is looking to get in on the action:

Pa. Senate moves to block state grants to 'sanctuary cities'

The Senate bill says a law enforcement agency or municipality that refuses to enforce an immigration order would not be eligible for state grants unless it has attempted to turn over a suspect wanted by immigration authorities but is unable to do so within 48 hours, excluding weekends and holidays.

A Senate fiscal analysis says the proposal could mean the loss of up to $1.3 billion to places known to be sanctuary municipalities.

Well, that and the post I made a while back showing that there have been 0 attacks by immigrants from those countries since 9/11. That most have been done by people born in the US with the exception of the DC Sniper (the kid was born in Jamaica and raised in NY) and Boston Marathon bombing (both Russian). But hey, why should they let facts dictate their policies. I think they should just clone velociraptors and have them roam the boarders.

There's a couple points outside of the terrorist angle to consider since this is has been framed around rape, murder, property crimes and drug distribution:

We're in a net decline of illegal immigration....more are currently leaving than coming
66% of illegal immigrants in the US currently have resided here for 10 years or more
Statistically the percentage of immigrants who are criminals is about the same as the non-immigrant population (but you'd never know it from the bad dudes rhetoric)
Crime is still on the decline (but you'd never know it...)
Govt focus on deporting criminal immigrants has resulted record numbers of deportations while sanctuary cities have exited
Sanctuary cities cite the positive impact of the policy increasing safety by encouraging illegal immigrants to interact with authorities
Net economic effect and role of illegal immigrants in the economy

Choice 1 is eliminate sanctuary status and there's no guarantee that immigrant crime rate will go down. There is plenty of speculation that the opposite could be true.
Choice 2 is eliminate funding to city law enforcement and there's no argument on what the impact of that will be

But I thought all of the rape, murder, property crimes and drugs were the Mexicans? I thought we were talking the ban? I am so confused, it is hard to keep which brown people are going to harm me in which way.
