The headline is ridiculous. Clearly, the actual quote from Sotomayor was an affectionate bit of hyperbole directed at her fellow justice.

Clearly. But sarcasm doesn't travel well over the internet, so nobody is going to read it, or the Breitbart article I got it from, as anything except serious.

Yeah, I watched that earlier today. I agree with the monolith in theory, but what Trump's election has done is allow those that are/embrace the worst of what he says to think it's okay to be xenophobic, misogynist, religiously intolerant, anti-immigration (the biggest oxymoron for any white American), etc. Further, people who haven't been that way might do the same as this behavior has been (to use the highly annoying overused word of the week) "normalized" by the results of this election.

It's that cultural shift that so worries people and by supporting Trump (regardless of reason) and allowing him to actually become President, "you" are part of the cause. You've helped turn a symptom of what is horrible about our culture and a significant number of our population into standard operating procedure in the eyes to so many.

That's the thing, though. It's not everyone. Target those who think it's ok to be all of those terrible things. Keep Bannon out if that's your thing (it is mine). But don't treat everyone as though they're those terrible things because that only alienates people further.

IDK, though. I wouldn't paint Trump supporters/voters with the same brush as sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, etc.

But even if I'm being at my most generous, then it's still ignorance, myopia, tunnel vision, and/or selfishness. Or perhaps stupidity. Or peer pressure. IDK.

I think we should alienate folks. Making common cause with bigots and cretins should cost you cultural capital. You should be shunned. Failure to throw crybabies out with the bathwater is what gets you bullshit like dogwhistle language and creeping lazy racist everything.

And that's why we're in this shitty position. Because neither side will even consider talking to the other.

What's all this "sides?" I'm talking about not tiptoeing around all the special snowflakes who are goddamn wrong about history and actively trying to make things worse for real human people because they enjoy begrudging and play acting at being total hardasses or whatever.

If you cozy up to racist bullshit and exploitative economic policies and authoritarian shitheaddery, you deserve whatever PERSONA NON GRATA status you get in polite society.

And, "ooh, but I voted for the unprepared neo facist dude who said terrible scary things because blah blah shake up government and run it like a business" is terrible goddamn judgment. At the very least these types of voters are morally bankrupt twits.
