Well, the only thing I learned last night is that Lester Holt should never moderate another debate. Ever.
Seems to me, unless the debate formats are changed such to something not dissimilar to what @Chad was suggesting, it does not really matter what the moderator does. A debate would include an actual discussion of the issues, rather than a guided recitation of stump speeches and subsquent mud wrestling, that then he had trouble controlling. It really concerns me that apparently the public does not know how to think. Or that the sponsors or organizers of these "debates" believe so. The last debate is on my birthday. I am hoping to find a way not to waste my birthday watching it. But, . . . the train wreck! Really truly hideous.

Absolutely, and he took great pride during the introduction saying all the questions were his. Why the hell did he bring up the birther thing, other than to rile up Trump (which doesn't take much). Why would Obama's birth certificate have anything to do with choosing our next president?
Credibility issue for the candidate asked. It is common to cross examine witnesses on issues that impact their credibility. But, it certainly does not lead to rational discussion of current issues.

the people voting for him don't care how badly he does, how little sense he makes, what outrageous thing he says or who he attacks. they are going to vote for him and nothing he does will sway them. the have blindly accepted that he is a successful person without asking for any proof. they blame Hillary and the liberal media for everything.

his "policies" are glorified versions of trickle down economics which was a total failure for everyone except the very wealthy. poor people voting for trump is a real head scratcher.

its just really, really sad.

The moderator's principle job is to keep people on task and make sure they speak within their allotted time. Trump didn't give a damn about the time, he spoke when he wanted to and freely, right over both Clinton and Holt.

I spent her entire retort screaming at her to invoke Ben Stein. Had she done that, an entire generation would have voted for her, if only to save Ferris.

I love it when Trump jumps on the mic like a 4th grader trying to disrupt the school assembly by yelling out, "Testes, testes, one, two....three?". If he wins he will be our youngest president...mentally.

Unfortunately, the networks love turning presidential "debates" into a reality TV show. Let's face it, the fix is simple - the moderator gets a kill switch for each candidate's microphone. Easy, simple, effective. The fact that this hasn't been implemented tells me that last night's WWE performance by Trump is what they want.

You want a movement. That's not what we have in this country. It's like wishing Clinton was the perfect Democrat. The major parties have quashed any possibility of it. Independents who have the opportunity to get their names out there, and random third party affiliated candidates to move the ball forward is all we have right now. So you can either wait 20 years and continue to vote for the downward spiral in the interim, or get behind it now and quote Oscar Jordan with your best, "I was there!"

You mean wait another 20 years? I was there, back then. It's your turn I guess. Shoot for the stars, kid.
Sorry, you can have your pipe dream. Until 3rd parties do the ground work necessary to actually succeed, I will watch them complain from the sidelines. Enjoy your 2% of the pie. Until they actually put in the work, this will be their lot

Hey now, don't steal my idea

I like my name that tune isolation booth better :embarrassed:

You can't do the groundwork without money. Matching funds are what this election is about, at least for Johnson/Weld. But you don't want to hear that.

It's the same story every election. Random person wants to be president, without any support in the senate or house. How is that supposed to work out? Neither Stein nor Johnson have what it takes. You have your fingers in your ears. Matching funds don't mean shit if you do not have the pieces in place to get anything done. Rinse and repeat. Learn and return. Oscar has a better chance of being president than either of those 2 fools.

Gary Johnson and Jill Stein can want to be president all they want. It isn't going to happen. The only outcome they can hope for is matching funds to further establish the party and start to build that network you want. That's the process you're voting for with a third party/independent candidate. Of course they don't have the pieces today. But they never get off the ground if 5% doesn't vote for them. That's not fingers in the ear, that's observing and supporting the process. You don't support the process. And that's the only point we differ on.

One of my Right Wing Nutjob friends posted this:

I wanted to reply "I can sum all of those up as..... Can I have 'Right wing nutjob conspiracy theories' for $400 Alex?"

Along with a new one that says "Sources say: Hillary Clinton received the debate questions days before the event...."

Honestly, even though this doesn't even warrant being legitimized, any one of us could have guessed what 95% of the questions were going to be a week ago with a pen and a cocktail napkin. :embarrassed:

My point is that the only way they will reach the threshold for national recognition and respect is to set their sights lower and start filling state positions, then congress and the senate. I argued this point to death back when Perot ran, and their tactics have not changed at all since then. They go for the gold, then complain when they don't even make the race. IF they had started a real grass roots effort back then, they would be in a position to compete today. But they didn't, and they aren't. It will be the same in another 20 years if they continue in the way they have been. You don't recognize the necessary process, let alone support it.

To make it fair, it should almost be like a chess clock... where it counts down and the candidate can see when their mic is about to cut off, or at least drop to 50% volume, and switch to the other candidate's turn (or the moderator).

If the Republicans lose this election... the 3 parties we may see will be Democrats, Fiscal Republicans, and Ultra Conservative Republicans.

I'd like to see a groundswell, but this is the election we're in. There's no sense in independent candidates not running for President and getting into the media. I do agree that regardless of the matching funds outcome, independents need to contest local races. But saying that a national campaign is off the table isn't the right approach either.

I think it absolutely imperative that he be forced to answer for shit like that. It's about accountability.
