This is why it is such a bad look for the Academy to have handled it this way.That was my immediate take away as well. He seemed to be laughing along with Chris, then he's up on stage smacking him. Weird. I guess he noticed that Jada didn't think it was funny? Who knows. In any case, not worthy of physical assault. But I guess when you're a powerful Hollywood player, you can do what you want.

I haven’t watched an awards show in about 15 years now, but yeah, it is surprising that one of the biggest stars in Hollywood would physically assault someone onstage over a joke on a live telecast.

It really is unnecessary. What other industry has enough self-importance to decide that the whole world needs to watch a 3+ hour event where they pat each other on the back? Is it any wonder the ratings for these awards shows have been on the decline? OTOH, a few more fist fights and folks might start tuning in again.
