I thought it was odd when I saw that Will chuckled at the joke and Jada winced... then the camera cuts back to the stage, and that's when it escalated.
Here's the full, unedited exchange:
But then Will apologized to those in attendance (but not to Chris Rock) for his outburst during his award acceptance speech.

So obviously when the camera cut away, Jada was more than displeased with the joke, so I did a little googling.....
Her new appearance isn't shaving her head for a role, but instead she announced a little while ago that she has alopecia (hair loss) and today there is more discussion regarding that aspect of the exchange:

One could write it off as "out of touch celebrities over-reacting and then apologizing for their tantrums...."
Except barely a week ago I was at a vigil for a middle school girl who went to a nearby district... she had alopecia and once school started she was bullied. Some kids pulled her wig off and hit her up the side of the head....
and when she couldn' t take the bullying any more, she committed suicide. She was only 12.

So I'm not giving will a pass for escalating to violence..... but more to point out that this is another issue that doesn't get much discussion, there's so much media and advertising for "feminine beauty" that it must be overwhelming for women and girls who suddenly have this challenged forced into the open.
Honestly, it gives me a huge new respect for Jada Pinkett Smith as displays how beautiful a bald woman can be, despite struggling with it internally. Their family is constantly scrutinized for their polyamorous sex life, the roles they take and pass on, and even their kids in the spotlight... but on this subject, my heart goes out to her and hopefully
the next little girl who is feeling stripped of her beauty because of a condition, can look at someone like Jada and realize where beauty comes from. It does not come from the clothing, hair, and makeup alone... those are the ornaments for the human face and body
