We haven't discussed whiskey here in a while...

I got some Utah whiskey on Saturday

Lucked into a third bottle of Pappy 20 year.

The last two went to my pop (as have two bottles of Stagg Sr). This one I'll either keep for myself or convert into living room furniture; I need the furniture more. I can't believe the way the bourbon industry has exploded, I knew the Pappy is hard to come by (I used to get it when it wasn't), but the fact that I can't just walk into the ABC store and buy Blantons, Buffalo Trace, Bookers, Rare Eagle, etc. is mind-blowing. When my Grandpa died in 2004, he had a cabinet full of maybe four dozen bottles of single barrel bourbon, birthday and Christmas gifts going back years, we each took one ...and the rest was donated to nuns! I would kill to have that cache again.

Myself, I am happy with Jack Daniels, Basil Hayden and Bullett Rye. I don't cork-sniff much.

Cut back to only drinking on Friday and Saturday nights. Anywho, usually have bourbon around. I've found Elijah Craig to be perfectly cromulent, although I got Woodford Reserve this weekend. I've been finding a certain "sameness" in most bourbons I try anymore.

Had a bottle of JD rye a couple weeks ago. Very tasty treat. I agree with things having the sameness in taste particularly when it comes to bourbons.

I'm not a big drinker by any stretch, and that's been especially true of whiskey in all of it's forms. The few times I have purposely had whiskey was after already getting well lit on other drinks and being in no position to give a proper critique. I did have a tremendously fun time one evening with a bottle of Jamison's and a bottle of Tillamore Dew (which was made absolutely hilarious by my VERY drunk friend trying to pronounce it and coming up "Tell me I'm a Jew"... which he was, and just sounded ridiculously funny at the time).

Flash forward to 2020 and my oldest son turned 21 at the end of January. The kid is straight as can be, has zero interest in drugs or alcohol etc, and had never tried ANYTHING. I told him we needed to have a drink and asked what he wanted. He said he'd heard a lot about whiskey and thought that might be the ticket.

So off to the store I went to fetch a bottle. I didn't want his first experience with it to be garbage so I bought a bottle of Maker's Mark.

Well... we each took a shot. We each made a horrible face. We each felt violated. :)

I just don't get the appeal. I clearly don't have a taste for it, and for the life of me can't imagine how it's possible to gain one. Ugh.

More power to you guys that dig it. Should any of you ever find yourself at Casa De OGG, I have a nearly full bottle of Maker's waiting for you.

Stumbled upon this beauty yesterday.

Quite unique. The 100% rye makes it very spicy and more than a little sweet. It's not gonna become my go-to or anything, but it's a nice change of pace.

Spend a little more and take sips, not shots. Over ice is a nice option.
I'm not a fan of standard Maker's Mark, so I get what you're saying.

Not sure if this has been discussed. If you haven't tried it you will thank me later.

Caution - It's about $100 US Dollars a bottle - on sale for $70 if you can find it.

I just finished a bottle of Blanton's last night. Probably won't see one again for 6 months or more.
I have word that there are litre bottles of Buffalo Trace waiting on me at my local store.
I love that they'll hold stuff for me.
