I've been watching the responses to your thread but haven't contributed. If your budget is $400, that should get you an entry level hybrid at a bike shop. I'd avoid craigslist unless you have good luck.
Bikes are like guitars. There are Gibsons and brands you never heard of - and they're all shiny. If you don't know a lot about bikes you could fall for the kind of craigslist crap that you could handle if you were guitar buying. The best move is to go to a shop.

With knowledgeable friends, stick your toe into Craigslist, because (like used guitars), there are some really cool deals to be had. I managed a used bike shop for 10 years, I own 6 operating bikes and 3 projects - and I'm still trolling CL for deals. Totally unnecessary gas (bas?). Sound familiar to anyone?

I don't know if this is political but watching the Academy Awards with my wife. This guy hostin, MacFarlene (don't know what he has ever done - but wish he would go away forever) - really in bad taste. "The man that really got into Lincoln's mind was Boothe". OMG - it's not even that funny.
