Signature Guitars

why do people buy them?

-to sound like their favorite artist?

-features not available anywhere else?

-do you refuse to play signature guitars?

-what do you think when you see someone playing a Sig model?

Personally, I buy them for the features I can’t get elsewhere. I have no desire to sound like a certain artist, and I know a signature guitar is not going to make me sound like anyone other than myself.

i have 2. don't really like the artists at all, just like the features of the guitars. not really well known artists or guitars so to the average person it really doesn't look like i am trying to copy someone.

I have a Geddy Lee signature bass guitar. I liked the feel of the neck, the look of the black, block inlays on the maple neck and the Badass II bridge.
I love Rush but that wasn't why I wanted it. I would have wanted it with or without his endorsement.

I need to break that out of it's case soon.

I have a lot of signature guitars. All of them I bought because of features I wanted. When I bought my Valentine I had no idea who James Valentine was. The nice thing is my signature guitars are fairly obscure, someone would have to really know guitars to know I was playing a sig model.

that is a really sweet guitar. someone on another forum bought one and i had to ask who he was too. i didnt even know maroon 5 had a guitar player anymore lol. if you took that to a show i bet almost no one would know that was a sig guitar.

same with mine. both are balaguers and i just liked the features of each guitar. one is fluffs who really is only known on youtube and the other is beau burchell of saosin - also not very well known at all.

I (sometimes) play a PRS SE Santana Mk II guitar, handcarved by Carlos Santana from timber sustainably harvested from the forests of his native Panamerica.

Mostly because it is silver and sparkly, really.

I don't have any signature guitars. If a guitar had the features I wanted, I would buy it. If I were going to buy a Reverend, the Reeves Dirt Bike would probably be my first choice. I don't dislike Reeves, but I wouldn't say he is a big influence on me or that he is one of my favorite guitarists. I know he played with Bowie and the Cure, but I couldn't tell you what albums or songs he was on.

On the other side, I really want the Ron Emory parlor acoustic from Fender. Ron is a huge influence on me and most people have no idea who he is, the fact that he even had a signature guitar is crazy. I'm not much of an acoustic player, but if I bought one, it would probably be a parlor and this one is pretty cheap so it tics a few boxes. It probably sounds terrible, but I wouldn't care it's a Ron Emory.

I wouldn't buy one to sound like a particular artist though. Just because you are playing their guitar, doesn't mean you will sound anything like them.

Reeves is on everything Bowie did from 1987-1999, he also just re-recorded Never Let Me Down as re-produced (2018) by Mario J McNulty. All songs have all of David's original vocals and guitars. New guitars are by David Torn & Reeves Gabrels, bass by Tim LeFebvre, drums by Sterling Campbell, string arrangements by Nico Muhly.

only recording with The Cure was as a guest guitarist on Galore's Wrong Number in 1997.

I love my Reeves, but I don't have the desire/ability to sound like him. To be honest, I love him as person and he's awesome to hang out with, but his style of playing isn't really my thing. It's very impressive though.

He's great with The Cure. He plays those parts so well. He references the original parts while still doing his own thing. The Cure is one of my favorite bands, and the first concert I ever attended in 1992.
