And then you pick someone up from the hospital who has to pick something up at home. He says he is a paranoid schizophrenic, is only wearing a hospital gown ( no underwear), stinks to the point I have to stop myself from retching... great to be back to work
:thu:

Sounds like a fucking blast.

Rarely do I sympathise with @jbj but the thought of a classroom full of kids around this time of year. Urgh :chow:

Ummm try any time of year with these kids. I'd never taken a day off teaching until I started working in ASN - some of my classes I spend more time telling them to wipe their nose, wash their hands and stop touching their mouths than actually teaching

Any children IMHO. I teach coding courses for kids every once in a while, and while of course it's satisfying to transfer some of my knowledge and have the occasional kid get the point that coding is fun and you can actually do awesome shit with it when you don't just do the lame web things, holy crap it's exhausting. Especially since I'm younger than most of their teachers by quite a lot and do "cool" like play games they know things and travel abroad for gigs which means class is postponed a week makes them see me more as the nice guy so I have to make it extra clear that, yes, I'm nice, but there's also fucking boundaries I usually come home exhausted. Lately I've been hired to do web-based video lectures and shit like that a lot more than stand in front of a room full of kids, and I have to say, it's a very welcome relief. I really can't imagine teaching full time...

I love it and genuinely couldn't envision what I'd be doing now if I wasn't in education. I remember being at school and thinking these people in front of me were leviathans with all sorts of no doubt amazing backgrounds and stories and now I find myself, coming from something like the bottom 2nd percentile deprived scheme in the country winning national awards and, whilst attainment wise I'm no longer getting kids into uni to do History, I'm really making an impact on these kids lives going forward even if it's something as simple as getting them to tie their laces, do a bit of basic hygiene or use ICT to communicate their needs.

It's humbling and as I'm kind of on my way up the greasy pole I get bouts of imposter syndrome but so be it.

One tip I'll give, in a practical, tangible sense, especially if you're dipping in and out and in the cool zone is this:

- as nice as it is to have them like you, you're not there to be their friend - I have colleagues with 30+ years of experience that still don't get this and it makes their life more difficult than it needs to be.

- it's much easier to start off as a stickler for the rules / hard ass and ease off from there than start soft and try to win back ground. The kids who are savvy and mature understand that and you can get more relaxed around them, the ones that don't get with the programme then you've still got them on a close leash.

Still recovering from weekend gig in Edinburgh. Was an old-fashioned Edinburgh saturday night: good music, lots of steaming drunk people, massive street fight... I miss Edinburgh

Almost snowed in over here :embarrassed:

About 2 feet of snow since yesterday morning, which I can't remember ever happening this early. Usually that's for late February/early March.
Nearly did my back in shovelling today. Bit of a workout... :embarrassed:

No snow as yet here, but I suspect it won’t be long. Gonna be funny, as in the UK, at the first bit of snow everything grinds to a halt, massive panic and people start panic buying milk and bread

Yeah, complete and utter chaos in Oslo a few days ago when they got a couple of centimetres.
Up here we're used to it, so no panic. It's just a bit annoying.

Driving under the bridges towards the Cowgate after 1am when it's been pedestrianised except for my car is always an eye opening post gig experience :embarrassed:

No kidding! The amount of people that suddenly sway off the footpath onto the road right in front of you. You have to assume it's definitely going to happen.

On my way to Bergen for a gig. Had the opening night of the theatre project I've been working on yesterday. Whole process was a mess, but the result is alright. Glad it's over though. Now for some good times, hopefully a good gig and some partying.

Because of course nothing can just go right lately, our plane decided to throw a "warning light" before takeoff, resulting in a huge delay ending in the plane not leaving, 2 back at the gate and then me going ballistic at an airline employee about their absolute non solution of "just wait and otherwise you'll get there tomorrow". No love, our gig is tomorrow, we can't wait till late afternoon tomorrow. In the end we got a plane through Oslo, with them telling us we'd make the transfer just fine, but the suitcase might be a problem. Which is nice, cause that only has all our gear  but we got there, had a beer (okay a few beers) with the organizers and our suitcase was not an issue at all...

I'm so gonna nag these fuckers for the delay compensation... Bloody morons could've just rerouted us immediately, not stressed us out with horror stories about our suitcase being there or not being there, mentioned the fact that the plane with the "tight" connection still had 5! planes going to Bergen later during the night, and generally be not fucking useless until being shouted at...

Anyway, I'll dump a pic tomorrow if I get one, as I realise I've never actually posted any of the stuff I've been doing for the past 4 years :embarrassed:

I've been to Bergen twice.

Both with exes :embarrassed:

First time we were students and literally had about 40 quid between us for 3 days on the boat and a night in town

So you were able to afford half a beer? :embarrassed:

This place is lovely indeed. People are nice, the venue we played was awesome, the sound guy was amazing, the organisation of the festival is in a constant state of chaos but very good to us, the city looks nice, the people we're meeting here, both local and other foreigners are a lot of fun, generally having a blast. Shame everything is so fucking expensive :embarrassed: tomorrow we'll be doing another set in a small temporary semi-outdoor thingy on a square in the centre. We asked one of the locals who was also playing tonight to play with us, his stuff is a lot more random than ours, so should be exciting.

Yay, back for 2 days, got hit by flu.

Festival was awesome though, Saturday was a blast, the improvised set went very well and we had a blast with the local dude. Gigs on Saturday were amazing, one thing with a dancer wearing some sensors and two dudes making sound out of that, which was so good. Usually those kind of projects end up being awkward as hell, with neither the sound, nor the dance being any good, but this one was just spot on. And apparently this was the first time they actually did it with them all physically in the same place

Afterparty was mental, we left around 6 in the morning to pack our stuff and not miss our flight. While people were already off their tits on drugs at the venue, the afterparty was nuts.

Oh well, good times, now for some more laying in bed feeling like shit :embarrassed:

I hope you can see the images, if not, blame facebook. I don't know who made these and I'm not gonna rehost pictures if I'm not sure who to credit.

The kids in work are total grasses. One comes to me at lunch and goes 'sir, X was acting as you in drama today'

Said X turns a very bright shade of red at this point.

I go 'oh really wee man, what does that look like then? "

He hesitates for a bit, I tell him to give it full pelt, I'll not give him a row and he goes:

" DURRRR AHM MR JBJ AHV GOAT A HOT TUB N AH LUV TAE WATCH THE RANGERS! "

:embarrassed:
