The Catholic church has been okay for the at least the last 100 years in regards to science. The universities in the U.S. that are run by Franciscans, Jesuits, or sponsored by the Catholic church all have extensive highly regarded programs in various sciences. There are still issues with ethics that cause consternation, but science itself is not something that they fight against or are afraid of at this point. Now many of the bastardized American forms of Christianity like to denounce the Catholics along with other religions and their members are science-phobic and/or ignorant...if not just plain stupid.

The Catholic Church has been pro-science longer than the USA has existed. The Jesuits were teachers and started founding universities in the sixteenth century. Mendel was a Catholic monk who started work on evolution before Darwin.

I stand corrected and I was aware of most of that but seriously...the climate change denial bullshit really gets under my skin. And I'm pretty sure that underneath it all it is just a way to make the petrochemical industries more money (thats my :tinfoil: moment) but....

Neil Young > Skynyrd (1000)

Don't drink the kool-aid.

Both were / are good, but Ronnie was a much better singer.

Not a fan of present day Skynyrd per se, but they were one of the best bands back in the late 70's. Nobody considered them racists, because they weren't. And nobody gave a fuck about the confederate flag either.

Southern Rock was king in the 70's. The whole 'racist appropriation' thing didn't start until long after most of the band were dead.

Yeah, that's OAKLAND

Racism isn't a factor here. And it doesn't matter if Caruso, Sinatra, and Freddie Mercury were co-fronting. Skynyrd's material is simply weak, in comparison.

It's hard for people who weren't raised in the south to understand this. I'm 46, so way younger than the guys in Skynyrd. I was never taught that the confederate flag was bad. It was part of our heritage and should be celebrated. You travel the state and it is everywhere and you don't think anything about it. Growing up, I saw plenty of African American folks wearing a confederate hat or flying the flag in front of there house. An old bandmate of mine, who is black, was born and raised in VA and he wear's a confederate flag hat on stage and sings lead on Sweet Home Alabama in his current band, so how could it be bad? It wasn't until I went to college and really thought about it that I figured out how wrong it is to celebrate that flag and think about what it really represents. I think for older folks (like the guys in Skynyrd) it took them a little longer to see that. They made a statement years ago saying they were removing the confederate flag from their merchandise and shows. Patterson Hood wrote a great piece about the flag and he has tackled the strangeness of south all through the Truckers catalog.

And it was on primetime on the top of a car featured in a popular show. As a kid from the PNW, I always thought that was weird, and thought that Skynyrd's use of that flag was weird too. But I tried to understand their point of view about it being something historic and it not being about slaves. Still thought it was weird. The speech that Tig posted by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu struck a chord with me in that regard. Curious as to your thoughts on it as someone who grew up in the South.
