the idea that democrats don't own and know how to use firearms is almost laughable. all those union guys are the most ardent hunters in the country. the right wing actually aren't the most well armed....just sayin'

same here, went through the NRA hunter safety course when I was a kid, did skeet shooting most of my younger years, hunted, and trained to safely handle and shoot handguns. And I am all for gun control, especially for people with known mental issues. It's the kids of modern gun advocates who have been responsible for most of the school mass shootings. If they could just limit their killing within their own households we'd all be better off. That includes babies shooting their mothers who put handguns within reach. I can't believe the ignorance of these gun owners.

Agreed. I know lots of people who hunt and shoot, and a lot of them a liberal people. I'm a liberal, elitist university professor type to those idiots, but I have lots of guns.

As for the NRA, they are nuts, and even my moderate friends and more conservative family members have steered clear of that crazy train. The crap the NRA supports and their position on issues are just disgusting. They used to be THE source for safety training, firearms sports, and law enforcement firearms training in the US. What a sad thing to sell their long legacy of teaching responsibility for the crazy political organization they have become. I can't even wrap my mind around some of the crazy statements and positions they have taken over the years. I'd be embarrassed to attend an NRA sanctioned shooting event.

I have to add about my father-in-law that the walls of his office are covered in JFK art and the gun is kept for test fitting in police cars (they build police and other emergency vehicles) but as a former Smith and Wesson dealer he does own quite a few personal guns although he doesn't go shooting anymore. The problem with stereotypes is that they are stereotypes but these days the easier it is to repost a meme the better. Like this:

I'm conflicted about firearms. I own quite a few of them, mostly to rent for local movie and television productions, and I'm licenced for that.

Honestly, though, even though it's partly hypocritical due to what I just disclosed... I don't think that any civilian should be able to own a handgun or a semiautomatic. Shotguns and hunting rifles only.

Even then, I believe that, outside of the home, they should be kept in a case under lock and key. This also applies to motor vehicles. Only homes and hunting zones.

I'd be totally fine with people being automatically charged with 2nd-degree murder if a gun is used in self-defence outside the home. Would be an effective deterrent.
