OMG Politics, I'm over it already.

As one of my final acts as an academic, I am helping to organize and international infectious disease conference. We had a conference call about the venue yesterday and had a serious debate about NOT having it the United States because of the government suppression of science and the potential entry visa harassment of delegates. I've help organize this meeting for 14 years and this has never come up. Troubling times.

This is really the most amazing thing I've read all week. And that is saying something. OKLAHOMA: http://www.newson6.com/story/35398128/republicans-announce-plan-to-fill-state-budget-hole

The caucus said there are 82,000 non-English speaking students in the state.

“Identify them and then turn them over to ICE to see if they truly are citizens, and do we really have to educate non-citizens?” Ritze asked.

The caucus thinks that could save $60 million.

I wonder if the $60 million figure assumes all the non-English speaking students are non-citizens, or just a percentage of them.

"And we aint a bit prejudiced!"

I particularly liked this post in the comments:

"Agreed. But only after we do a study to determine how much ignorant, racist white shitfucks cost the state. Gosh, I wonder where we can start with that one?"

Does Oklahoma have a hockey team? Maybe TP can move there.

I didn't even get to the comments on that one.

Fuck them in their meathead faces.

The irony is that most people that say "WE SPEAK ENGLISH HERE IN AMERICA!!!" usually aren't very good at it. And also wrong because we don't have a legally defined national language.
Seeing those very common, very basic errors bugs me because it smacks of intentional ignorance. Example: I had a female classmate in high school, who was cute and ran with some other cute girls. She would ask me for help in some of her classes including literature and religion/philosophy (Jesuit school), and photography/dark room. I didn't mind helping out. But, she never seemed to try that hard to learn and use basic grammar and spelling, and didn't seem to care very much about. She was one of those girls who would sign your year book, "Your the best." Yet, despite her seeming lack of care, still she asked for my help. I still am cordial with her at high school reunions. She is married to another friend of mine. But, her FB page demonstrates the same intellectual laziness. That laziness is demonstrated in her posts by the way she writes them, her lack of thought, her politics, etc. Those basic grammatical errors, especially when one was provided an opportunity for a really excellent education, are symbolic of mental sloth. Seeing them really bugs me to this day.
