New-ish kitchen jam

We have paint!

Two coats on the ceiling and one on the walls.
The lighting will play tricks with that wall colour. I like it.

See? No dis light on this wall and it looks brown.

SCOPE CREEP!

Mrs DCF likes the paint colour so much that she wants to get the tv room painted.
And remove the wainscoting.
And change all of the baseboard and casing.

So the first bit of the wainscoting came off.

And the oak railing is gone.

And that’s created a bit of a problem.
The new posts that were purchased are bigger than what came out.
That means that the hole in the floor and the notch in the tread need to be opened up.
OR
We don’t put a handrail on that side of the stairs and we just replace the lower tread.
We could put a handrail on the other wall.

Code says we might not need a handrail at all.
There are two treads and, as I interpret it, three risers.
A riser from the lower floor to the first tread, a riser from the first tread to the second tread, and a riser from the second tread to the upper floor.
It’s kinda open to interpretation. Some would not count that riser from the second tread to the upper floor.

Honestly, I don’t really care anymore. As long as Mrs DCF is happy.

Code. I did a house once... A foursquare. Front door in the middle, go through door, turn right, Living room, turn left, dinning room, go straight stairs to second story. Builder framed house as per blueprints. When he went to put the steps in, he found out if he framed them to code, there wasn't enough room and the door would hit the bottom step. Not so bad that you couldn't open the door but, if you wanted to go left, you would have to shut the door first. So, he cheated, making the treads 1/2 inch smaller. 1/2 inch times 13 tread gave him more than enough room. He got caught. He had to reframe the steps and the wall where the steps were open to the living room... drywall again... then I went back and did the steps again.

Could you get rid of the handrail base entirely and extend the step all the way across? That seems like the most obvious and visually appealing option to me.

Sorry, I realised I started posted about our kitchen on this thread instead of mine so I've hijacked your thread that was made not to hijack mine!

yep. That’s one of the options and I think that’s what we’re going to do.

Part of me thinks these posts he brought us are leftovers from another job. But I like them.

Just noticed you have a couch right in front of the section.

I'd still go for a full stair but if it's going to look a bit weird putting a glass panel in instead of spindles could be an option if the modern look would go with out decor.

I did it with the staircase in our old place and I loved it. Amazing how much the space felt opened up visual when the spindles were took out.

Really easy job if you're half handy too and plan it properly. I'd do it in the new place but we have a nice cast iron railing instead of spindles I think I'd regret removing and the stairs run a way that you're not really looking onto the bannister most of the time so it's not going to make as big a visual impact as the old place.

Good eye.

We could shorten the overhang on that stair tread a bit and that would give us a bit more room to push that couch closer to the wall.

And yeah, glass instead of spindles has been discussed.
I think that could work with the wainscoting gone from the tv room.

Floor went in yesterday.
Those stair treads are getting replaced.

Cabinet maker has started our order. Should be ready in a couple of weeks.

Doesn't look like a huge area, maybe you will get away with putting the cabinets on the floating floor.
That’s the plan.
The cabinets will hang on a bracket on the wall and just have adjustable legs on the fronts. So, not a lot of load on the floor at all.

I did a new house, carpet in just the bedrooms. Everything else- great room, kitchen halls and bats were LVP. Builder did the LVP themselves and did it before cabinets. On the west wall of the kitchen was a 6' wide patio door, 12' of cabinets on the north wall. About a foot out past the cabinets, the LVP was 6" above the floor. But, between the great room and the kitchen, probably 40' from one end to the other, way biger than that space.

Bull nose is on.
Posts for the railing.
New stair treads with the first application of stain. It’s a pretty close match to the tv room floor.

It was a full day of finicky work today.

Looking at that id definitely go for glass there. Clamps at the bottom and one at the top of each Newell would mean you don't even need a bsnnister. it'd look really slick and open the place right up.

Slowing down a bit but the cabinets might be ready next week.

All of the wainscoting is gone from the family room.
Baseboards and casings are in.

IMG_4780.jpeg

I swapped the door out for a solid shaker style. It and the door frame/trim still need paint.

Railing is in.

Well, I followed the instructions to drill the holes for the door handles.

So, I went and bought another door…

Now that I’ve seen the results of following the instructions, I’ll just do what works instead.

Fit the new door and got the handle installed.

IMG_4845.jpeg

More stain on the railing and a first coat of varethane.
IMG_4838.jpeg

Stair treads too. The risers are going to get a different treatment.

IMG_4839.jpeg

Wainscoting gone. Walls patched and painted and new baseboard and casing all around.
Were close to getting this room done, but we’re waiting so the cabinet installers have some room to work/store the cabinets.

IMG_4842.jpeg

I have a box of Ritz mini cheese sandwiches ready for TV night.
IMG_4841.jpeg

TV should arrive tomorrow and I’m ready with the wall mount.
It looks way too high, but I followed the instructions and the TV should sit about an inch from the ceiling and almost 3 inches from the mantle (leaving room for a soundbar should we decide to get one.) The TV will tilt down some as well. That should help.

It's looking good.

I love that skirting board, it's really unique. We're going to have to put skirting covers on once we do the floor - previous owners plastered onto the current skirting so it's basically part of the wall now and no way to remove without really making a mess of the whole thing. It's going to mean the skirting is really tall which will look (and tbh probably be) v. expensive. I just hope it doesn't look stupid given we're gone pretty modern with the decor.

The contractor suggested the trim style and it’s pretty inexpensive.
It’s actually a 5 1/2” baseboard with a 3”casing added over the lower portion.

You can see the full baseboard without the casing in the railing photo - on the wall at the top of the stairs.
That will get casing when the rest of the trim is done after the cabinets go in.

TV went up on the second attempt.
Samsung instructions suck and there is a noticeable lack of installation videos available.
Once you try it one way, you see the deficiencies of the approach and another approach makes sense.
It would great to be able to figure that shit out without a 50 lb TV over your head.

Biggest complaint so far: the picture is so lifelike, it looks fake.
Minor complaint: the mantle is off centre and the TV is centred on the bricks. The adjacency of the mantle makes it all look out of alignment. It’s a matter of a half inch or so, but it drives me bonkers. A new mantle might be in our future and we’ll make it full length across the bricks. I’ll build that myself I think.
