Several years later, I owned one of that bike’s primary competitors; 86 ninja 600r

Throwback to '85 or '86, my Yamaha FZ 600. Not a bad little bike, but air cooled was on the way out.
I had some crazy kid kinda' hair, too!

I got on a dirtbike for the first time in over 30 years yesterday. I didn't get crazy with it, what with my bad knees, bad hips, bad shoulder, and finicky wrists, but it was sorta funnish. Too much bike for me after all this time. Suzuki 4-stroke 400cc Thumper. It's insane how tall modern moto-x bikes are! And how light! At 6'4" I can't put both feet on the ground while sitting on one. The amount of suspension travel is ludicrous, but I sure wish I had as much back when I was racing my RM125 in the Stone Age. The finish line at the old Carlsbad Raceway was a 40' jump that went immediately into a 90°banked right turn. Carry too much speed into it, and you'd be picking hay out of your teeth for days. Hit it just right, and the landing was bone shaking. Too slow... you're likely to have another bike/rider land on top of you. It was awesome! :)

Anyway, yesterday almost made me miss it.

I raced motocross in high school. I still miss it. Took up mountain biking years ago, but not the same. I used to love how you could land your motorcycle sideways from a jump and the power in the back wheel would just straighten you out again. I had to learn the hard way on mountain bikes years ago that you have to land straight.

Is that the 300?

Congratulations !

Yep. Haven’t had a bike since the 90s. Wanted something I could pick up if I dropped out on the trail by myself yet capable of a long tour. Also I’m a bit challenged in the inseam department for anything taller. I don’t plan on serious trail riding but I do plan to be out on gravel road solo at times.

Was looking hard at a RE Himalayan but the dealer seemed lackadaisical, so combined with the fact it was an Indian bike I went with the tried and true Kawasaki. I bought my 1st bike in 1980 from the same dealer I got this X300 from. He got right on the price and I know he’s trustworthy.

I think you made a great choice on several levels. One of my friends has a RE 500 classic and its easily the lowest build quality and assortment of questionable quality I’ve seen in a long time. I read they have upped their game and finally switched to robotic welding recently but at the end of the day, they still have plenty room for improvement. That Kawi is better designed, built and spec’d, plus offers some wind protection. Slap a good set dual sport tires on and you’ve got a great gravel/unimproved road runner.

Pulled the trigger on the Klim Carlsbad jacket and pants. Rode in today and DANG they are nice and an upgrade over what I have been using.
