Mental health check-in

Since I'm basically a retired hermit it hasn't been too difficult. I'm missing the occasional jam session, and my daily run to town for whatever, but other than that I'm fine.
Now that the weathers warming tho I'm itching to hit the road for a few days on the Harley, so that kinda sucks.

My sister-in-law posted this on FB:

“Just how do we explain to our kids (mainly the 6 year old) that it’s ok for the Easter Bunny to visit? Apparently the Easter Bunny shouldn’t be allowed in because he will surely be a CV19 carrier after having visited so many houses. They are obsessing over all of the doors and windows staying locked so that the Easter Bunny can’t get in. FML.”

I’m getting the vibe that there will be a whole generation with germaphobic OCD.

100 percent for sure we will have a generation and even c arry over into cross generation of OCD level germaphobia in the future. Also probably an increase of people paranoia in general

I have been fine so far. I'm not so sure about Jaxie, our dog. I think he wonders why we are home all the time. He may be questioning his future of us providing him meals. He has been practicing his cute, begging for food face a lot lately.
Does anyone know of a good dog psychologist who practices social distancing?
Zoom will work.

hey...that is one cute looking little dude !

My grocery run this morning was a morale-booster. I was dreading waiting in line etc, but was pleasantly surprised by a half-empty parking lot, sane people, and mostly-stocked shelves. Even scored some lovely scallops to sear for supper.

It is still far from normal, with all the masks, gloves, and better stand on the red square dammit. But way better than a couple weeks ago.

Between that and getting a haircut, my spirits are higher today than they’ve been in a month.

The Easter Bunny is a bunny not a human. And therefore doesn't carry the virus.

If anything this should confirm that God is real and his choice to send a rabbit to our houses is entirely reasonable.

Don’t be hard on yrself. I’ve had a ton of manic energy since I was a kid and I’ve simply learned the coping skill of maximum busyness to keep the wolf from the door. I normally work longish hours, cook multiple meals from scratch everyday, and spend multiple nights a week on recording projects without a quarantine—partly because I broke my brain during grad school, largely quit watching teevee, and dialed way back on bad habits like semi-regular binge drinking and reckless candle-at-both-ends behavior. Without something productive to focus on shit gets weird quick. It’s a bug not a feature.
Well, regardless, congratulations on turning your bugs into something productive. Won’t hold myself to the same standard. My wife keeps herself busy so she doesn’t think of stuff. I think of stuff and can end up paralyzed in my mind and brain chemicals. Just different ways of handling the shit we are in.

But my very industrious, boot strappy, small town, put a smile on it and go to work parents (one now dead) and that upbringing, make it hard for me not to be hard on myself about it. and sinking into paralysis never gets me out of it. Working on finding the re-boot button. Thinking some sort of mindfulness is a key of some kind. And self compassion. Kinda like when thoughts come into your head when you are supposed to be meditating. Looking at those things as passing clouds and not engaging, then returning to the breath. Using some concept similar to that.

Ok, more thinking out loud. Gonna go ride my bike now.

I went shopping yesterday!!!!! It was the first time I've been in a public setting since the second week of March. Yesterday, I had to go to the Stanford Blood Center to pick up a dose of dexamethasone so I can do a granulocyte donation on Monday, so I decided to make a stop at TJs on the way home. There was a pretty long line to get in, but a young lady asked anybody over 60 to follow her to a much shorter line - FINALLY being decrepit pays off! Anyway - I zoomed around in there, finding all sorts of great stuff (including a 12-roll pack of TP) and got out just before the guy who was behind me in the original line got in. However, far from being pissed, he told to me "have a blessed day". I guess we haven't quite reverted to Road Warrior state here in the South Bay yet. Anyway - I was able to pick up some lamb chops and a couple of top sirloins, and on Sunday our son will come over and we'll grill us some meat. Of course, I'll have to stay six feet away from him, which isn't going to be easy. We all miss each other a lot.

At some point in the not-too-distant future I will probably retire, and go back to Wisconsin, where phenomena like that are quite common, but in the meantime, I'll take the Mediterranean climate right here...

I mean, my own kids would have been able to understand this distinction.

But my sister-in-law married a guy who didn’t have enough intelligent DNA to pass on to his kids.

Thus, they’re leaving liquid soap, Lysol wipes, and a mask in the mailbox outside the front door with a note.

Ive been on short rides of an hr or so just for the fresh air. Our weather here has warmed up nicely in the last few weeks. We've had a lot of rain, but I can't complain about that. Most years we appreciate a full spring water table come August and Sept.
We are due from some tornado weather tho Sunday along with 2-3 more inches of rain.
Really was looking forward to a multi day bike trip down to the gulf before it gets really hot, but its looking like that aint likely to happen. All the campgrounds are closed and its surely not the time to be staying in hotels.

I went and visited my mom in the yard today since it’s supposed to be storming. I brought her an Easter basket with half and half because she was out.

My mom is super down with Jesus, but I don’t think she believes in the Easter bunny.

I finally put up with the line today and went shopping at Trader Joe's! 30 minute wait outside, but well worth it to get all of the regular items I'm accustomed to. I had been going to a little neighborhood market the past couple trips, but the prices are way higher and the food not as good. And I got toilet paper as well. I am happy now for at least 3 weeks (I loaded up).

fucking hell. I have to go to the fucking store again. Having a 20 year old college kid at home, and everyone being here at home all the time, has dramatically increased our grocery consumption. Plus for some reason we still have to recognize this stupid holiday tomorrow. Never was much of a fan of Easter.

Now I'm going to lose my shit. The stupid state has shut down all the state parks in my area. Now I have to drive at least a half hour to get to an open park.

I got some eggs to dye, candy, and even brought my mom a basket. I’m also the guy that’s like Christmas carols so take this with a grain...

It sounds like you’re probably stressed the fuck out but I’d suggest trying to have fun with it even though it’s kind of ridiculous. When was the last time your grown ass kids did an Easter egg hunt? It could be an opportunity for some good memories.

That’s why I’m glad to live out west.......public lands and not necessary to rely on state parks....just head on out to any national forest land, BLM or state trust land and have at it

I rode through some canyons today.
85 miles or so.
Next Thursday I was supposed to be heading to Kingman AZ,for a week of riding through the desert.
Oh well,maybe in September.

It’s starting to go that way here. Most of Rocky Mountain National Park got shut down because people were bringing the virus to the little mountain towns when they stopped for food. And now the Boulder Department of Parks and Rec is threatening to shut down all the parks and trails because people keep getting together in big groups to hike and exercise. Someone posted photos of a group of idiots who got together at a local park to do Crossfit together.

This is why I can’t stand libertarians. The world is full of people who are stupid to care about their own interests. We can’t just let them run around fucking things up for the rest of us.

So, I’m a Christian and I thought it was pretty well understood by all of us that Easter was mostly the appropriation of an existing pagan holiday in order to make new converts out of pagans. The early church did that a lot. Christmas was another. It worked pretty well. I don’t think it makes the Christian celebration of Easter any less meaningful, but clearly all of the fun stuff is pagan. It just happens to be consistent with the Christian message of re-creation and re-birth.

Back in topic, my mental health was getting pretty nasty to the point where my wife suggested that I might want to consider getting back on some anti-anxiety meds for a while. Thank god she feels comfortable telling me when I’m being an asshole. At least then I can do something about it.
