Mark's Music School Diary.

I understand that. But I thought he was saying he was playing a Dorian over a major progression/chord.
No, just that two of the scales they require are the 2nd and 5th modes of a major scale. Remember that these requirements are 19 year olds who are new to much of this information. Thats why I am doing the first three juries in one sitting. I want to get to something that is actually a challenge.

It's when you use a different note of a scale as the root. "dorian" (as Poparad said above) is when you use the second note of a major scale as the starting point so instead of getting an arrangement of half steps and whole steps with the half steps between he 3rd and 4th notes and the 7th and 8th notes you get them between 2 and 3 and 6 and 7. The resulting sound is going to be a minor tonality although not the same exact sound as a Natural Minor or Aeolian mode which is your garden variety 7 note minor scale. The big difference is that in Natural minor you have the half step between 5 and 6 instead of 6 and 7.

This might be useful...I did these videos a few years ago.

Gotcha....just required scale knowledge.

Thanksgiving. I've had the week off of school but I've been practicing a bunch since when I get back it's just a week before final performances and juries....

No, I get the modes concept. If you scroll back a little, I thought mark was saying that they were learning to use a Dorian scale(minor) to solo over a major chord/progression.

My bad...

Ironically, sometimes I will do something like that just because the b3 is just equal to a #9.

Buying. It's almost the same to. It as it is to rent three times next week.
