Mark's Music School Diary.

That’s cool Mark!

I sympathize. I just finished all of my classes, end of last year, and lack my student teaching to be done. I had senioritis bad. Last few assignments were the toughest of them all.

ARRRRGGHHHHH.

I have two more papers to write and I am sitting here in front of the computer like a 5-year-old refusing to eat his vegetables.

I did get this in the mail Friday though:

May 3, 2019

Dear Music Honor Student:

It is my distinct pleasure to send to you this letter of invitation to be inducted into the National Music Honor Society, Pi Kappa Lambda, Beta Omega chapter! It is a mark of distinction for you that the music faculty members of Pi Kappa Lambda, Beta Omega, CSUF, have voted in favor of having you join this organization. Election to membership is indicative of superior attainment in music, together with the personal qualifications pertaining to yourself as an outstanding exponent of the art.

This national honor society itself was begun in 1916, at the School of Music, Northwestern University (Illinois) and bears the Greek letters associated with the initials of the founder and Dean of the school of music, Peter Christian Lutkin, thus PI KAPPA LAMBDA. For further information, you may visit their website at http://www.pikappalambda.org/

Just picked up my honors medallion. I have a 3.96 gpa in the 3 years that I’ve been at this school but the transfer units that the would count most of from 1991 had a 3.1 so I’m just graduating “cum laude” instead of “magna cum laude”.

There’s an awards and scholarship convocation in an hour for the school of music and I was invited to attend to be recognized for inclusion into the Pi Kappa Lambda honor society and to receive a late “Friend’s of Jazz” scholarship.

Finals week. My world music teacher is offering 3 points of extra credit to students who come in for an extra class to help with the last few term paper presentations. Since the final is only worth 8 points, I think I will participate and take some of the pressure off. That final is tomorrow. Wednesday through Friday is when I can take my Human Behavioral Ecology final although I'll probably do it on Wednesday and Thursday is my Jazz Pedagogy final. Graduation itself is on Saturday.

I think I'm going to the beach on Monday. By myself. Just gonna bodysurf and sit on the sand.

Winding down some more. One more final tomorrow in Jazz Pedagogy. Got a little surprise yesterday that will wrap this thread up nicely if it works out.

I almost snatched defeat from the mouth of victory yesterday in my world music final. I had forgotten that the final was scheduled for a half hour earlier than class time and missed the first four listening examples. The professor gave me four different examples to identify after class since it was an honest mistake and I've been doing well all semester and apparently got an A on the final. Turned in my term paper for that class online this afternoon, did my online final for Human Behavioral Ecology this morning, finished my term paper for Jazz Pedagogy this afternoon. Just the pedagogy final tomorrow and I'm done.

Congratulations on all you have accomplished. I remember how tough it was going to school, holding a job, and having family time. I didn't have children to think about as you did so I am in awe of your accomplishments. You should be proud.

tell me about it.
I honestly cannot imagine how you must feel right now...

I've been, as you should know, following you through this very closely...it's not something I could ever imagine doing myself, I just don't have the fortitude for it...

Since we spent some time together in Skype I think you and I are beyond mere online acquaintances...I want you to know how very impressed I am with what you've done...and how very proud I am of you...it's a mind-blowing accomplishment...you have more than earned my eternal respect, my friend...

The beach is waiting...

Thanks Gary :)

Thanks David. :)

I'm exhausted on multiple levels. I'm happy to be moving forward with like but there are things on the horizon that are both exciting and daunting. More on that later.

Always awesome when you are given one list of music for the final at the beginning of the semester and you get a "revised" study guide 23 hours before the test with completely different music to know for the test. Luckily it is easier for me but it would have been nice to waste hours of my life on something that ends up getting changed on less than a days' notice.
