LP Special Doublecuts??? Let's talk about 'em.

Thinking about things, would love input on this idea:

I have a Les Paul Custom with 3 humbuckers. I never use the middle pickup. What if I dropped a P94 in there (humbucker sized Gibson P90)? My initial thought is that in the middle position I would get a pretty blah P90 sound. What say you? Not concerned with resale value issues as I'll never part with this guitar and I can always put the humbucker back in.

Why not? I bet it would sound cool!

Absolutely. Me, I'd start with it in the neck but, you can always move it later.

On 3-PU Gibsons, the stock switching is 1) Neck only 2) Middle+Bridge 3) Bridge only. Yours is Middle only? I see no harm in trying.

Switch is still stock so I'd need to remedy that as well. Possibly convert to a master tone and swap out the other tone for a middle pickup volume... then wire up the toggle.

I'm still concerned the P90 glory won't be achieved sitting in the middle position.

I think middle may be fine, especially for testing.

Some prefer the neck, some prefer the neck, you're splitting the difference. The neck PU on a DC Special is halfway between neck and middle anyway.

You guys are enablers in the best way.

Assuming I attempt this experiment, I’m think I should get a bridge P94 over a neck version. Thoughts?

Are you trying to kinda sort of match the output of the 2 humbuckers? Me, I would get a neck pup. After this experiment it could one day wind up in the neck of a Tele,

Sweet georgia brown on the cross, if this were $2k less than what they're asking I'd buy one and marry it.

holy shit. If that were lighter, this would be a problem for me.

Ug I say I want to wait for a doublecut and then I'm ready to buy this one. Must resist.

Let me help you: I'm skeptical about that listing. It's listed as in "good" condition, and the caption indicates it has marks, scratches, etc. ("Product rank: B: Quite, there is a feeling of wounds & use,") yet the photos make it look like it just came from the factory. I doubt the photos are of the actual guitar they are selling. Also, it looks like the fretboard hasn't been oiled since the Bronze Age...
