I was looking for his card the other day and couldn't find it. He is mostly in the LA area of things from what recall. Sadly I don't remember his name so FWIW, people can take it for a grain of salt and choose what they want to believe.

I don't doubt that it may have happened. While I seem to be one of the few, I am a fan of the Union album from Yes. About 20 years after the release I found out that a guy names Jimmy Haun was brought in to replace a bunch of Steve Howe's guitar parts because the label didn't like what he was playing. In hindsight I could hear a difference in what I thought was Howe's playing, but I chalked it up to the situation of trying to fit in with the modern Yes sound. But if a label can replace the legendary Steve Howe, I see no reason why they wouldn't have someone fill in for a no name kid from Ireland 30+ years ago.

Exactly!

Labels have done this for years with many of those players to still remain unknown. @OGG just did some recordings himself in threads that he posted here. He chose to keep his name off in regards to those credits and my guess is that he would know of many other recordings done in that such way as well.

We always see with our eyes first sometimes before our ears...

Way, way more common than anyone would think.

And, again, Vivian was really young, so it wouldn't be hard to write it off as him evolving and finding his voice. I think Mike Slammer was a LA guy that apparently did all the Warrant solos, and that's only the stuff that was exposed. Supposedly he was well known and highly regarded by other big name players in LA. You can bet Lukather and his peers played on a bunch of stuff "in the style of..." that we'll never hear about. Lazy, drunk, drugged out rock star guitar god can't get his shit together, you get someone who can. If he's out of it enough he may never know that he didn't play the parts.

I kind of remember the guys name now as it was something like Walt Williams. The only one I could find on the net was a lefty on you tube and he was of the same decent and also a lefty. The video had him playing some solo jazz stuff. Slowly bits and pieces are coming back as he told me that he repaired instruments at one of the stores somewhere in San Gabriel Valley and knew alot of the old jazzers the he learned from.

Boy I wish I had a time machine...

That's a good wish. All too often we wish we had a sandwich or something of minimal use like money (in varying sums). A well used time machine would provide far more long term use and value.

Jake E. Lee was temporarily in Dio and though he never recorded with the band Campbell later performed parts that Jake had originally written.

I really dig Sykes. no i really dig Campbell......................hmm i gotta go with BOTH

Something i never understood about Vivian Campbell was that both he and Ronnie James Dio both come across as really nice guys but man o man was there ever bad blood between the two

I like Sykes better as a guitar player. I like Dio's songs better. I absolutely loathe Def Leppard. I will seriously change the station when ANY if their songs come on.

Honestly, aside from the odd Dio tune, I rarely listen to either. not really my thing, I suppose.

Then I heard Campbell on Dio's first album and I dug it. Sadly later on I found out that another guitar player did the solo work on Dio's first album.

I seem to remember hearing that too. Or maybe Viv did the solos and someone else did the rest. But for some reason I remember hearing he didn't play something on that record.

It may be just the solos. My memory is shot from age and other crap so things I learned 5-7 years ago I feel like am part of the 50 first dates club.

I wrote an article/interview about this that Premier Guitar Magazine had no interest in. They were more interested in what kind of guitar straps he used. Fuck them.

I'm a responsible journalist so I covered it anyway. I'm an intrepid guitar reporter that asks the tough questions. It's how I roll.
