My exposure to Sykes was the Tyger of Pan Tang....Never got into Sykes.

Then I heard Campbell on Dio's first album and I dug it. Sadly later on I found out that another guitar player did the solo work on Dio's first album. So with that all said..."Neither!"

This is news...

I decide "Neither!"

If only the choices listed...

I hate guitar

Oh yeah!

This is isn't unheard of and has been done for years. Here is another one for you...Nikki Sixx did not play all of his bass lines on the first album.

No, I know that.
I just haven't heard that Viv didn't do the solos on the first album, and a quick Google isn't helping either.

Vivian Campbell is not the same guitarist he was in the early 80's. He's just not that guy anymore but who is? With that said his playing on those early Dio albums affected me personally and I still have the "Rainbow In The Dark" and "Last In Line" solos under my belt.

John Sykes has been consistently amazing ever since I saw him on the Slide It In tour with Whitesnake. Saw him with Blue Murder too but I never ever sat down to learn any of his stuff. He writes great tunes though and plays the hell out of everything. He was originally supposed to have the Richie Kotzen slot in The Winery Dogs. That would have been interesting.

Yeah, but people talk. I would have expected to hear "so and so did the guitars." Hell, I could see the Dio camp outing him during the spat the two have.

When I first heard of this I thought the same as well. Google the fella back then and the guy is a great player. I met him some 7 or so years ago as we both shared a common interest of prototype train modeling. Got talking about guitars and made the event go quicker - event was prototype modelers display as we both had our works on display. In fact I forgot all about him up until I read this thread. I have his card somewhere in the stack of many other cards and thought too a first when he told me that it was bunk. After hearing his story, one doesn't make up this stuff and I just kept it too myself. In fact I listened to the first album again after meeting him and remembering back when I saw Dio in concert. Campbell's playing style didn't quite match up with what was recorded when I saw them in the 80's.

FWIW - people can believe what they want.

Who's the guy?

I was looking for his card the other day and couldn't find it. He is mostly in the LA area of things from what recall. Sadly I don't remember his name so FWIW, people can take it for a grain of salt and choose what they want to believe.
