Joe Satriani... I don't get it....

Satriani was also a teacher, some of his famous pupils being Kirk Hammett, Alex Skolnick of Testament, and Larry LaLonde of Primus. I find all of them as being inspirational players, maybe even more so than Satriani himself.idn_smilie

Spoken like someone who's not listened to much Satch. He's got plenty of acoustic stuff on many of his albums. And, while I LOVE Kottke (until he sings, anyway), Hedges bores me to tears. Great player, just no songs there, IMHO.

... Satch's "Mystic Potato Head Groove Thing" wasn't yet available on an album.... we had the floppy-disc thing out of the guitar magazine... transferred it to a cassette....

... and I had the DJ play it at one point in the evening during my wedding reception. :helper:
 
baimun - i didn't know you liked Sex and Religion... i love that album... freakin unreal. Devin Townsend is another badass!!!! can't believe he was only 19 when he sang that album

I've really been digging the Devin Townsend Project stuff... He's an intense dude...
 
I have most of the albums discussed here, have played them hundreds of times. Beck shames them all, and none of them but Jeff could touch the master in his time, on his Tele.

I have always loved that album. As far as start-to-finish-every-track, it's my favorite Steve Vai album.

never been a fan of Joe's records.
I've liked some of Steve's stuff.

I remember hearing Eric at one point years back, but that's it.
 
Love Satch. He's not just a shredder, and actually constructs songs as opposed to solo vehicles for the most part IMO.

I agree with this.

Satch has a more finely tuned (no pun intended) songsmith ability.

That being said, I walked out of a Satch show last year. It fucking sucked, to be honest.

Joe has some great tunes, and he didn't play any of them. Well, he did play Bamboo, which is listenable, if not one of his best.
Starry Night, The Journey, Summer Song, etc... are all well crafted, and he didn't play any of them.

Vai has like 2 well-constructed songs that I can think of. Frank and For the Love of God.
Everything else I have ever heard by him is just a vehicle for him to jerk-off with the guitar.

Now, it is quite well-constructed jerking off, but the end result is the same......a heaping load of Vai-Butter.
And I'm just not that into that......


Satch-Butter is much better on the albums....live show music selections just sucked.
SO LOUD. SO BAD. Search my review of that concert on this forum.......
 
He's a phenomenal guitarist, but he is probably my least favorite of all the instrumental guitar guys.
