I’m crazy. I purchased a fretless Vigier Excalibur

My thoughts watching the video-

After 5 seconds: Which guitar do I want to pull the frets out of?

Couple of minutes into it: Fuck. All my fretboards are either Maple or rosewood.

As I'm typing this-

How stupid would it be to put self stick copper shielding on the fretboard? I bet Icopper would work.

Bassists have been filling their fret slots with all sorts of fillers on their conversions. Start there maybe?

Fretboard in video is Imetal. Some alloy Guthrie didn't understand, makes high E sustain longer than normal fretboard. I was half joking about putting sticky copper on one. Still stupid enough to think about it though.

Somebody on HC played a fretless guitar. Corresponded with him for a while. Decided complex chords were out. I bought a cheap fretless bass. I am now learning how to slap it. Staying in tune is a function of how much you play it.

That looks like fun, I've been running the idea by of buying a fretless neck, or yanking the frets from one of my cheapies.

That's near the top of the "have unlimited time and space to devote to guitar" list. I think it'd be a lot of fun.

I think that makes sense for you and your style. I have played a couple of fretless banjos; it is a different animal, to be sure.

Think so too. I spoke with Brakophonic, the other guitarist in GuitCussion. He’s been playing fretless for decades, and is invited to fretless festivals all around Europe (!). He gave the advice to use thin half-round strings, since ordinary strings tends to give a quite loud scratching sound when moving up and down for vibratos - instead of ordinary bendings.

Interesting.... A way to make me sound like I'm drunk while I'm playing... even when I'm sober. :embarrassed:

That said, I did play one of those fretless tiny basses with the rubber strings and thought that was a riot. :helper:

I want one of those so bad. I think it's hard to find strings nowadays tho.

Me thinks you’re all are somewhat negative. A fretless can do heavy metal too. Here’s Mike Orlando playing a Vigier Excalibur Surfreter. Starts at 3 minutes.

I used to love messing with those at NAMM. I honestly would enjoy owning one. I don't know why more jazz guitarists don't play them.
i'm thinking that a fretless guitar AND a fretless bass would be a bit much.
but then if they're playing avant-garde jazz.....who could tell the semitones don't match.

If that were a real issue then no orchestra in the world would be in tune. People just need to learn the proper technique for accurate intonation, the same as any violinist, violist, cellist or bassist.

You’re correct. Almost every guitarist who pkays fretless slide up and down to intonate perfect according to ear. No violinist, celloist or bassist do that. They all have a muscle memory and know where the right tones are.

Yup. Trombones too.

And beside orchestral music... pretty much any much any bluegrass ensemble that has a dobro.
