I’m crazy. I purchased a fretless Vigier Excalibur

There's a quite funny moment in the first Aristocrats live DVD where Guthrie is tuning up his fretless before they play Blues Fuckers and he says "this is quite pointless, really. This song is supposed to sound ugly".

Interesting! HNGD

Even though I grew up playing the violin, the thought of playing a fretless guitar gives me the willies.

That is crazy and cool and we need a video of playing. I've been long interested in something like that. Too scared though.

I used to love messing with those at NAMM. I honestly would enjoy owning one. I don't know why more jazz guitarists don't play them.

Chords, I’d expect. Triads and simple bar chords wouldn’t be too much of a problem. But then...

Perhaps with some different tunings.

I don’t think of anyone other than Fiuczynski do anything exciting with it. But I’d still love to spend some time with one.

I'd think about doing it more in an ensemble setting and just playing small voicings for comping. But yeah, not so easy for solo guitar I' imagine.

Cool. I bet that is going to be a mix of awesomeness and frustration. Looks like hella fun to me. For me the frustration would come from having shitty ears and barely being capable of playing with the help of frets. The awesomeness comes from all the cool slides and non-event tempered stuff opening to a world of non-Western music.

In the colour amethyst purple and with gold hardware. Decadent.

Looks exactly like this one:

Here’s Guthrie Govan playing one:

My thoughts watching the video-

After 5 seconds: Which guitar do I want to pull the frets out of?

Couple of minutes into it: Fuck. All my fretboards are either Maple or rosewood.

As I'm typing this-

How stupid would it be to put self stick copper shielding on the fretboard? I bet Icopper would work.

Guess it’s necessary to see a fretless as a different instrument and thinking slightly out of the box. To play complex jazz chords in perfect pitch will be very difficult without frets, and it’s not a blues axe either. But there’s a lot of other things that can be done with it.

If you honestly wanted to try it without installing a shield, you could pick up a cheapie, remove the frets, and put flatwounds on it.

One of my thoughts was, If I had a guitar that needed a refret, you could try it in-between. Don't have any needing a refret. This gives me an idea of buying something better, that needs a refret...

I do have a Korean Hamer Strat so, bolt-on neck, wouldn't mind a chunkier neck if I destroyed the stock one but, find a replacement neck for an import. Can't destroy that one for sentimental resons.
