How many guitars do you NEED?

Ideally I would need:

- 1 Superstrat with Floyd
- 1 Les Paul- type guitar
- 1 Superstrat with hardtail
- 1 7-string
- 1 Tele type guitar

I have 3 superstrats

Yesterday reminded me of one of the biggest reasons guitar "hoarding" is such a difficult habit to break. I've been playing the buhgeeziz out of my new Epi LP since I bought it a month or so ago. I just love it. I played yesterday for a while and then plugged in my Firebird... good gawd almighty!! On paper, they are nearly sonic equals, but in reality they are light years apart. Suddenly that "feel" of a high end instrument made itself known, and I swear my playing immediately went to the next level. That guitar coaxed something out of me that the Epi couldn't. Same for my Strats etc. They are all unique despite their similarities. Each guitar has its own character and inspires its own playing style. Sometimes the itch for a certain guitar is too hard to resist scratching. We often forget that until after we let one go. Sooner or later you'll feel that itch and want to scratch it. That makes thinning the herd very difficult mentally.

This.

One time I was looking at Strats and my wife (who totally gets GAS and is not at all a nag) was like "Another Strat??!??! Why?"

"It looks like it has a lot of songs in it."

I must say, my wife has always been totally supportive and never gives me any grief for my silly gear purchases or lack of self control when it comes to buying shit I probably don't need. She gets it.

Depends on how you define "need"...

For the purpose of this discussion I really only NEED one...that's all you can play at any time anyway...if you introduce the concept of "flexibility" then I would need 3 (1 acoustic, 1 electric with multiple switching options, and a bass)...

I have eleven because fuck you...

Hmm, I have 29, if one includes acoustics, electrics, and basses. I guess because fuck all y'all?

After reading all of the posts, I think I've got it:

Acoustic / Standard tuning
Acoustic / open tuning
12 string acoustic
Semi hollow (w/p90s maybe, and a Bigsby)
Single coil Strat
Tele (everybody needs a Tele)
Humbucker guitar
Backup electric /alt tuning
Bass

A mandolin is cool to have laying around.

That's a great list for a rational person. Unfortunately, my love of guitars is irrational.

One needs 2, of the simple reason that instruments sometimes break, or have to go to the tech for different reasons. I have 6 guitars, and play all of them everyday. But I don’t ”need” 6 guitars.

Or have hanging around.

You forgot the banjo...

Precisely this many + n, where n is an integer between 1 and 10.

To be fair, I need exactly none of them, but I don't buy things based on need. All my needs are fully met, as are those of the family, and those of the future, so what I blow my money on for fun is pretty much just up to me.
