How many guitars do you NEED?

Depends on how you define "need"...

For the purpose of this discussion I really only NEED one...that's all you can play at any time anyway...if you introduce the concept of "flexibility" then I would need 3 (1 acoustic, 1 electric with multiple switching options, and a bass)...

I have eleven because fuck you...

I really don't have a good answer for that. I feel I need two good acoustics- one for standard and one for open tuning. I need one electric, one bass, and a 12-string. But I have two Lunas I hold on to for sentimental reasons, a Danelectro electric that I also keep for sentimental reasons, and the Epihone John Lennon-styled acoustic-electric with the magnetic pickup that I keep for some reason I can't figure out. Add the mandolin that I never play and the banjo that I seldom play and I have too many instruments. (We won't talk about keyboards...)

There is no right answer. It depends on way too many variables that are unique to the individual. Sure, I know that I personally have way more guitars than I need, but it's not hurting anyone or keeping food off the table. Different guitars inspire me, often to expand my comfort zone and in turn, enhance my abilities. For live gigs, especially when I used the MultiFX, I played entire 4-5 hour gigs with just my White Strat and had a backup on standby. That suited the situation. For recording though... I can use 6 or more guitars on a single song if I'm really wanting each track to be its best.
