Euro 2020 (in 2021)

Scots could do with a decent striker. Dykes just isn't very good. :embarrassed:

His positioning is good, he's just, let's call it "unlucky" with finishing so far :embarrassed:

But the biggest problem is the back IMHO. They're playing quite decent when they have the ball, it's just an absolute clownfiesta when Czechia decides to put some pressure on the Scottish half. Most Czech offenses fall apart because of dumb Czech mistakes rather than anyone from the Scottish side intervening :embarrassed:

Yeah, apart from Robertson and Tierney (when fit) the rest are Championship level defenders to be honest. Cooper can be decent sometimes, but has been mostly injured the last year.

Striker wise I would have started Adams, he has at least shown he can score goals in the Premier League although he's not the best finisher on the planet.

So Scotland doing what Scotland does best...

Failing spectacularly when it matters

I wouldn't call it failing when it matters. Their offensive play looked pretty good, was fun to watch, and they definitely deserved a goal. Defensively I guess they really just don't have any better, but just as Scotland deserved a goal or two more than they got, Czechia could've gotten several more two if they bothered :embarrassed:

But if they'd scored then my bet wouldn't have come through:embarrassed:

Hence "failing". They should have scored, but didn't.
Idk, I think for teams like Scotland and Finland the goal is (or should be) to not make fools out of themselves and play some decent to good games. I think Scotland managed that. They were entertaining, had some really nice offensive moves. It's just clear that the back line is not EC worthy. They were unlucky that the Czech dude made two goals he's never going to replicate and that they didn't manage to score a goal.

well, maybe I was a bit too optimistic, but I was hoping with a strong organisation and huge dose of battle spirit Scotland could pull an Iceland. Maybe slightly overestimated their defensive abilities

I have to say, I commend Scotland a lot more for the way they played than how Iceland got as far as they did. It was cute and all, but Iceland was absolutely dreadful to look at.

And I guess it also has to do with the capabilities of the available players. The midfield and forwards of Scotland looked good, in control and comfortable. I can understand that if that's your team's strength you try to play on that on a "must-win-to-have-a-shot" game. To a certain degree it absolutely worked. It just didn't work out score wise. But especially that second Czech goal was just a one in a million, if that shot wouldn't have been absolutely perfect, it could've easily gone to 1-1 and a completely different game.

Btw, Poland - Slovakia is going quite ham as well :embarrassed:

Typical Dutch outlook

But I bet nobody in Iceland cares how they did it. Same for Germany and Italy winning tournaments multiple times with horrible football, nobody really cares afterwards. We Dutch nearly pulled it off once nearly against Spain in the World Cup final, I don't think anyone would have cared afterwards.

I guess we will have to live for a while longer with how we nearly won 3 world cups

Yeah I don't mean they should give a crap about what anyone thinks. If it fits the capabilities of your team to play like that, go for it. But you only get away with playing like that if it actually works, otherwise you just look like a sad bunch of potatoes. I'm pretty sure Scotland wouldn't have been helped by trying to play like that when their useful players definitely seem more suited to something else.

I've never bought into that play nice football patter. I'd take Rangers playing dross and ecking out 1 nils week on week if it won them the league all day long.

It's not that easy though  If the players aren't very strong at playing defensively, you can put 10 of them in your own box but they'll still fold.
