Achtung! Bourbon.

Um an explanation is called for here I think!

HEY BTW Jaxn I finally tried Pico's!

I'm in a Bourbon club, and I coordinate these barrel purchases for it. About 30 people went in on these two.

I'm glad you finally made it to Pico's. How was it?

Look at what followed me home!

So did they let you keep the barrell your stuff was casked in? I'd bet it woulda made some insanely good firespice for the BBQ!

i need to join some booze clubs.

Pico's was great. We went for my birthday, it was a Saturday so it was crowded, but the bar is cool to hang out and wait and the 'ritas are really good.

My high school job was working in the garden center at Handy Dan's hardware. We sold Jack Daniels barrels cut in half for planters, and the aroma was delicious.

I want to be the sole member of a Bourbon club

Make it happen, guys. Find some friends that like the same drinks you do, and start getting together periodically. Before you know it, it will have snowballed into what I've got here.

Yes, those are the two barrels right there. That photo is in my driveway. Firespice isn't a bad idea. I am about to fill one of them with 55 gallons of honey-apple wine. The other one we were thinking about doing a beer, but I can't be bothered to brew this month. Maybe the next one. Firespice is probably our best option for the other one right now because it leaked like a mofo. You can see how many fewer of the red boxes we got than the green.

Had a glass on the rocks last night. It was so good, I decided to do the same tonight. It is fine neat, but the flavor exploded on the rocks, so I'll continue this method... Right now, in fact! It is very smooth for 100 proof, and the finish is long and tasty.

I've drifted away from the bourbons lately, but Knob Creek has reeled me back in. I like it more than Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and Angel's Envy. It has an incredible taste that just works for me. I tried it neat again tonight, but the ice trumps neat here.

OK, WTF is going on with me? :ack: I tried the Knob Creek again a week later and it suddenly tasted... wrong. I can't put my finger on it, but the flavor I liked is now the flavor I don't like.

Maybe I'm going through manopause. :embarrassed:

Mrs. T likes bourbon and Coke, so I used it there and it worked really well.

Sometimes right before I catch a cold, my taste for liquor changes dramatically.

SuperAIDS does that too I've heard...

Seriously though... one thing that is cool about whiskey IMO is how the flavor of the same whiskey can seem to change from day to day. And invariably, that very last sip when the bottle runs dry will seem to taste the best, and then I realize it's all gone.

Hmmm, I have been suffering some nasty allergies the last few weeks.

I had some Angel's Envy Saturday night, and it tasted ...wait for it... divine!
OK, seriously, it tasted better than ever. What was too sweet before tasted just right now. Maybe my growing taste for Speyside scotch is influencing me.

I love Angel's Envy. That's always one of the first bottles to get drained at our Bourbon Trust meetings. :)

The drink of choice tonight is...

It's been a while since I had this. Yes, it's the Costco house brand. No, it's not bad at all. Well worth the $19.95 price tag. But remember that it's 103 proof. So it packs a wallop.

I almost bought some Booker's Bourbon today, but decided to get a little more info and read a few reviews first. It ranges between 121 and 127 proof, so we're talking serious business here! Plenty of the reviewers really like it.
"I found the purest expression of bourbon I have known to date. The flavors are few but those that are present are so vivid that they sear themselves onto the mind, leaving an indelible impression. A singular experience not to be missed. If the first taste leaves you puzzled, come back for more, what is waiting is worthwhile."
Hmmm... This is tempting!

I'm almost out of scotch, (I won't count the out of balance port-fornication-fest Glenfarclas 12) so I decided to finally buy The Macallan 12. The 10 year I first had didn't do much for me, but it was my first foray into scotch. I took a few sniffs, and wow, I hope the flavors come close.

I had a class after work. I'm a little forked up. :ack: I know, I keep posting scotch in the bourbon thread.
The 12 has much more wood/smoke than I expected since it isn't known for it. It is pretty balanced with the sweetness kicking in, so I'll give it another try to be fair.

I've learned how much my perception changes from one dram to another. Who knows what I'll taste next time? Cabrito hooves?

I tried a couple of interesting things today.

Cedar Ridge was very good.

I also tried the Lion's Pride dark rye and 47th Ward whiskeys from Koval Distillery. Both were very, very good. They may be my new favorites. I'll buy a bottle of one of them this week. They go down like honey. Very, very smooth stuff.

That Cedar Ridge is very good. A colleague of mine in Iowa sent me bottle as a gift. I don't think it lasted 3 days. I don't know much about them, but they've renewed my hope in young distilleries being able to produce good whiskey.

I'll keep an eye out for those other two. Don't think I've seen them around here.

Wow, the Booker's was intense! You gotta' take it seriously. I don't see drinking it too quickly unless I need an emergency buzz. The flavors are pretty cool after the initial heat. Next time I'll let the fumes dissipate for 10 minutes or so.

The Rittenhouse Rye was very tasty, getting better with each sip. I've noticed that every bold flavored rye tastes a little like perfume with the first taste and morphs into a wonderful flavor with each sip afterward.
