I've been wanting to try rye. One of our favorite restaurants right now is an Asian fusion place that has a monster selection of whiskies, so it looks like we have an excuse to go there soon.

So I put together a rye taste test last night with what was on hand.
My personal results are Russell's Reserve Rye > Sazerac Rye > Rittenhouse Rye 100. The Sazerac is really tasty with the Russell's edging it out by only a thin margin.

I was drinking a fair bit of rye last night, too. We had the James E. Pepper Rye 1776 and the Angel's Envy Rye. Very different beasts but both excellent whiskeys.

I went to an event last night put on by one of our big liquor distributors in the area. I tried the Angels Envy rye whiskey for the first time. It is absolutely a game changer for rye whiskey. It's expensive at about $70 for a fifth. But it's worth it if you can find it as it's a small batch and tastes nothing short if incredible. Strong maple in the nose and hints of ginger and citrus with a buttery finish of bananas foster. Holy shit. I'm not exaggerating.

I snapped up a bottle from the downtown mega-liquor store. They bought a case and the shelf is full. It was $75 after taxes and I walked 5 city blocks and back in the rain to get it, so it better fucking deliver!

2 sips... OMG! This is like nothing else, yet somehow familiar. 95% rye, but it still isn't in your face with it. After it ages in casks, they move it to rum barrels for 18 months that had were used to age French cognac.

With just 2 sips, I experienced more flavors and notes than anything I've ever had, followed by very long, incredible finish. I'll savor a full dram of it tomorrow night, my "Friday".

Two nights of Angel's Envy Rye, and yes this is the good stuff. However, if I had a choice of only one American whiskey for the rest of my life, it wouldn't be this.
Why? It is a little like a very tasty yet rich dessert. Wonderful, but not for every occasion.
