Baseball 2018

As for having to pay as much as the dumbest competitor -- yes and no. I think that's true for some players in some sports, but then you get guys who will take restructures on deals (like Brady) because they're in a good situation. Or they want to go to a good situation.

Sure, it's not an all the time thing. The phrase is something a friend of mine came up with years ago. Contracts have gotten more complex and creative these days with deferred comp and all and of course it changes a little with salary cap sports. The point mainly being that if they want a guy bad enough, they have to pay him more than anyone else is willing to. And as you said, spending all of your money doesn't guarantee success.

Looks like the Giants are serious about trying to get Stanton. Not sure if it will happen, and I sure hope not at the expense of Panik. I have no desire to see Gordon wearing orange and black as part of the deal. The luxury tax issue will come into play on this deal as well. They may have solved center field with Duggar too. Kinda early to speculate, but that's all there is at the moment.

I wonder if they have enough money? I just wiki'd Stanton and I found out that he is the HIGHEST paid contract player in sports IN THE WORLD ;eek: I always thought those euro football players were but shite. It's pretty sick , pathetic and disgusting what these guys make. I am Baseball junkie but damn, almost makes me wanna quit watching sports. stantons average game paycheck is $154, 320 .99 .....for 9 innings of baseball. 25 million per year and a 13 year contract of 325 million gazzillion dollars....

The Giants definitely have enough money. But Stanton has a full no-trade clause and he can opt out in a few years. And then, the Giants have a barren farm system, so they have to trade Panik and accept Gordon. It just doesn't seem like the right fit.

I'd be quite happy if we ended up with both Stanton and Ohtani. Seems that Panik is no longer part of trade discussions, which is nice.

I know Stanton is holding out for an offer from the Bums, but I don't think he is going to get it. No way in hell is he going to the Cards. Supposedly he now wants to go to Chicago, Houston, NY or LA.

So, maybe it's just Ohtani in our sights now?

Any team that gets Stanton is going to get a huge jolt. Seems like the Giants' problem is they have no farm system to trade from. They could make a wild card run with Stanton so long as all of their injured players come back strong. That said, if I were Stanton, I would insist on LA or Houston. The Cubs won't have the pitching. And though the Yankees are always perennial favorites, I'm skeptical of Aaron Boone.

I'm getting really tired of pro sports' circle jerk: Jeter giving Stanton to his former team; Durant picking and choosing to join an already-stacked team.

As a Boston-teams fan, I'm spoiled in a certain way (the mid-00's Red Sox were a pricy roster), but it's getting ridiculous. In the mid-70's Bowie Kuhn wouldn't permit the A's to dump salary and trade Rollie Fingers and Gene Tenace to the Red Sox "for the good of the game." In 2003, Bud Selig put the kibosh on the Red Sox getting A-Rod (thank God, what a tool). But somehow, it's OK for Jeter to give the Yankees the NL MVP.

The problem with the Marlins is MLB rules for new owners. They must pay down their debt on the team at an accelerated rate. So you've just paid $1.2 billion for a team, now you need to dump all their assets and start fresh. The Astros did it a few years ago and now it's the Marlins' turn. Stanton was a salary dump. And they'll turn around and dump Castro too.

Wow, so the Giants gave up Christian Arroyo and a couple other prospects, along with Denard Span and got Evan Longoria from the Rays. That hopefully fixes the 3rd base issues they have been having (so why did we take Sandoval back?) but we lose a decent part time lead off hitter and outfielder in Span.

Interesting.

Astros were talking to Yu Darvish yesterday. Can he still hold it together or is he riding off in the sunset?

Also, imagine the awkward.

Keep the fighting in the family I guess.

Go for it Houston, Duck the Fodgers. Again.

Between the Yuli stupidness and the way the Astros shelled him, I think he may be permanently damaged.
