Three main issues....

1. Increased DUIs. Not as big of an increase as you might have expected, but there has been an increase tied to high driving. I drive a lot and ANYTHING that contributes to distracted driving (texting, pot, pain meds, booze, putting on makeup while driving on the highway) pisses me off. When you are driving - DRIVE.

2. Despite what the Gov said in the article Howie quoted above, there has been an increase in teen pot usage, and a big increase in pot related teen problems. I have several friends who teach in local high schools and Jr High Schools. At the high school my kids all attended the suspension/expulsion rate this year is more than triple the normal rate and the root cause is underage pot usage (suspensions) and pot selling (expulsions). There are also increased behavioral problems since teens just are not good with decision making and ingesting a lot of very strong pot is not a good contributing factor.

3. Increased pot addictions. I know this is a 'controversial' issue, but I know people who are/have been addicted to pot. It might be more a psychological addiction than a physical one, but it is very real.

I do think that the issues overall are actually less than a lot of people anticipated, but particularly the problems in the Jr High and HS level are worrisome.
There was a news item on the evening news the other night here that related studies have indicated an increase in MJ DUI, which was expected, but no increase in usage by minors.

In the bathroom? I'm not sure if that's incredibly bold or just stupid.

My high school parking lot was pretty much a party zone in the mornings before class and at lunch. There were occasional busts, but they were few and far between. They could have rounded up groups of folks every day if they wanted to.

I remember people smoking in the bathrooms when I was in school. It was good, it lead all the admins there so me and my buddies could go outside

Any mind altering thing in excess is bad. I know occasional pot smokers and they're great people, lead successful lives, etc... I also know people who are stoned every waking moment and they're pretty much perma-burned at this point. The same goes for alcohol. I think it's hypocritical that one substance is illegal and the other isn't. They're both capable of being abused.

My opinion is it boils down to money; any fool could grow reasonably usable, free weed. Making your own alcohol is doable but requires enough skill, equipment and time for most people to just buy it.
I could be wrong but I seem to recall reading that the reason weed is illegal is that in the mid to late 1800's hemp was beginning to compete with the cotton industry. And the Powers that be (those with a financial interest in cotton and political connections) were somehow behind it becoming illegal.

I take only a single issue with #1... there are no reliable "field" tests for marijuana, as the length marijuana can stay in your system is due to more variables than a simple sobriety test. I think states like Colorado will go a long way towards eventually implementing a usable scale for marijuana related DUI, but as it stands right now the amount of false-positives is concerning.

not to the private prison industry, they're not.

Neither substance is good or bad, it is what people allow it to do to them.

Wrong on that Gary. Please discuss medicinal alcohol, cuz that is a thing, right?

Don't wish to start an argument, and I know it is your business, but placing pot and booze in the same category is bullshit.

Not saying pot can't be abused, but it clearly has medicinal properties, which cannot be claimed about alcohol.

I also don't wish to start an arguement. I am not talking about medicinal qualities, I am talking about the addictive qualities both can have. I am neither a proponent or opponent of either substance; I just know that either can have a negative effect on a person's life.

By the way, in my field, we talk about alcohol and other drugs. We don't rank them, we just help people who have become addicted to them find recovery.

A lot of 19th century and early 20th century "natural" and homeopathic cures were mostly just high proof booze. I'd say those remedies were as effective as most of the marijuana cures out there.

"Medicinal" use was a huge loophole in the prohibition of alcohol...just like medicinal use is a huge loophole in pot prohibition.

Pot smoking high-horsers are worse than vegans and Bernie Bros and "but bacon is tasty" meat evangelists combined.

JUST DO YOUR DRUGS AND SHUT UP. AND NO I DONT HAVE TO HEAR THAT PHIS BOOTLEG THAT IS BLOWING YOUR MIND. THEY SUCK. GET OVER IT.

One thing I recognize over the years doing what I use to do is there are people who can do it and walk away and there are people who can't do it once and never walk away. I was a person who toasted and drank from 13 to 19 as a civilian and when I went in the military I walked away from it all for 30 years.

Many contained sizeable amounts cocaine. When I was a kid, my elderly relatives would tell stories of folks who took the medicines, coke, pepsi etc. The folks would be so fired up that the cops were scared of them. Night sticks and small caliber bullets did not slow them down.

I did a quick online search and found mostly contradictory information to those points. It is notable that usage in the 18-24 yr old demographic has risen but usage in the under 18 demographic has decreased or remains unchanged by most accounts.
w/r/t #3, the number of people seeking treatment is relatively unchanged but the consumption frequency among those seeking treatment is higher.

Hospitalizations for mj related conditions has risen though

Do you have more recent links? This is a topic that's on the news here rather frequently and the info above jives with much of what I see reported.

I can't afford it plus my lungs can't take it. I'm happy unwinding with a glass of bourbon or a gin and tonic after work.
