Gran Turismo appreciation thread

If anyone's interested in what a real F40 is capable of, here's Amir Rosenbaum's (still unbeaten) record run in the 2002 Virginia City Hill Climb. Frankly, it scares the crap out of me just to watch it.

This is my favorite one. I like putting it on full screen and turning the sound up.

This thread makes me want to buy a PS3, a wheel controller, and GT5.

Mrs. P, if you see this thread, that's what I want for Christmas. :embarrassed:

Did anybody catch the Top Gear where Jeremy sets a lap time at Laguna Sega on GT, then tries to do it in the same car at the actual track? He failed. :embarrassed:

Ohhh....searching Youtube, I see that Top Gear's test track is represented on GT5.

Must.

Have.

That's insane. Wonder what was modified? I mean, what COULD you modify on an F40?

No specifics, but two quotes that appeared on Ferrarichat:

"That particular F40, I believe is on its second engine, at least. It sure was a fun car to ride in, though. This is the same F40 that was modified for an in class land speed record, which it did not achieve, sadly."

-- and --

"Amir (the driver) is a very good driver with a good deal of experience at the VC hill climb. I have been up that hill countless times at speed in different Ferraris since I was in 8th grade. I have gone to the hill climb since age 9. I can tell that particular run in that car has stuck with me for many years. However my run in that F40 was done with his driving instructor David. David has a well known green 355 spider with yellow wheels. He also has 550M which he has impressed upon me the handling capabilities of a big front engine GT Ferrari. My run was honestly not really "scary" just very impressive. The F40 is a tremendously capable car in the right hands with the right preparation. The F40 in the video is very much not stock."

I seem to recall that they explained it by saying you wouldnt drive in real life the way you can in Gran Turismo, since there's no risk in-game. I saw a video years ago on the making of GT 2, and it was insane the lengths they went to to get everything right. I mean, I dont think it's a hundred percent so I guess Id be more surprised if they DID match the time, but I cant imagine being any closer to reality without being in the car.

OK, correct me if I am wrong, but from what I know of the F40, it's a small displacement, high-revving TWIN TURBO V8. I mean, I cant imagine what you'd do, it's basically already fully-tuned from the factory. I cant imagine the regular tuner tricks of adding boost or boring it out or adding top end, it's already been done as much as it can, no? I'd love to know what they did to it.

I was browsing through the "Cars Sold" section and I was reminded that the cars are posted in chronological order of manufacture, not when they were sold. That site has been online for years and there are some cars listed at prices that might have been appropriate ten years ago, but not today.

Mrs. P would probably draw the line at me getting this, but it sure looks awesome.
