Gran Turismo appreciation thread

I see it has a clutch pedal, does it actually work?

Yep. It has a six speed shifter too.....

You can use the paddles for up/down on the wheel if you'd rather, or set the shifter up for just up/down as well. It's worth the 300 bucks. Real leather stitched wheel cover and shifter shroud. It' amazing. :embarrassed:

So, wait......you can actually USE the clutch and it feels like the real deal with GT5? Wow. Up to and including 4, manual just meant using a button to switch gear, there was no real manual feel.

Yep. I'm not good enough to race in full manual mode, but I take cars out on test drives with it, and it feels like driving a car....

Mrs. P would probably draw the line at me getting this, but it sure looks awesome.

It is now my mission in life to convince my nerdy roommate to buy this immediately.

Wow. Just wow. That is incredible. Can you stall it?

Yea, drop the clutch on the 69 Camaro, and you'll sit and smoke the tires off just like in the real deal. They've modeled it really quite impressively. People report that driving the high end cars is very accurately represented in regards to handling and road feel, but I have no direct experience as I've never driven any high end cars.....

There is a lot to be disappointed with in the GT5 game, IMO - but the driving simulation isn't one of the things. :embarrassed:

What's disappointing about it? I mean, I want it to drive the cars. Not even necessarily to race, though that's a big part of it. If it feels like I am driving a Ferrari F40, them for me it accomplishes its mission. What dont you like about it?

Well, for first, expectations. It's six years in the making, and it's not close to being perfect. The interface isn't great (some say it's bad), there are problems with the online portion of the game causing lag and other connection problems which can even have an effect if you're not even playing online. The 'used car' market is different for everyone. So, you might have access to some great cars in there, or you might not. Luck of the draw. I think that stinks.

There is also this ridiculous 'B-Spec' racing mode, where you hire a driver, and watch the race as a spectator, acting as the pit crew boss, giving your driver instructions on how to win the race via a very simple set of 4 commands.

The music in the lounge and between races is pretty smoooth piano jazz or worse. It's repetitive, and seems a bit out of place.

Only 200 cars are 'premium' models, with interior cockpit views. The other 800 have been ported in from previous version of the game, and the result is some crummy looking cars compared to others. Since most popular cars have been ported, a lot of the cars you want to drive aren't premium. Because the auto companies didn't want you beating up their beautiful cars, there isn't any damage modeling allowed to the car bodies, which makes it a somewhat boring visual to run into a wall at 200MPH, and just stop.

The AI drivers think they're the only ones on the road. They follow a racing line, and often act as if you're not even there. They'll plow right into you without slowing down at times. It's not a huge problem, but one I've noticed.

The shadows are really pixelated. It's so bad it's hideously distracting. Luckily, it only is super visible before races, when they're showing your car from the outside. It needs to be fixed.

The graphics are so clean, that it's almost too clean. Pristine like. It's beautiful, but it takes away from the realism to me.

But the driving smokes... :embarrassed:

A lot of that is exactly like previous GT games, the driver AI and the damage modeling (lack thereof, actually) have always been the 2 biggest complaints. They dont bother me anymore. B spec mode actually comes in handy for the endurance races, I use it in GT 4 to win races I dont want to spend 8 or even 24 hours doing. It's nice being able to run it at 3x speed :embarrassed: The used car thing would really piss me off....does it update online?

After this thread, I'm with Prages. I really, really want a serious GT5 setup. I thought the previous games were great. I didnt realize the big step up 5 was. The clutch is HUGE for me, I want it. Bad.

The B-Spec driver can't do races from your series. That driver has his own series and his own level in GT5. So, if I wanted him to run an endurance race, I'd have to sit through watching him run in hours worth of races in order to get him to level 14 first....

:embarrassed:

You guys just cost me $50. :embarrassed:

I'm thinking about doing what Chihli suggested, get me a PS2 and GT4. and other games too, most are $9.99 or less. And since i have never really been a gamer, im not really going to miss not having the PS3. :embarrassed:
