Back to the 90s: Smashing Pumpkins vs Stone Temple Pilots

Well?

While I voted for STP, I am not so sure Billy beat out Scott for being a bigger asshole.
Scott Weiland signed on for one of those Rock Yacht tours where the fans hang out with the artists. One fan who paid a pretty penny asked Scott if he could get a picture with him. A belligerent and boozy Scott Weiland said something to the effect of "well, you paid your money right? Lets suck a dick".
Another fan on the cruise was telling Scott how STP really inspires him. Scott shut him down right away and informed the fan that he did not care to hear his story.
Plus there is all the missed gigs and flakiness that goes with him being an addict.
the thing with Billy being an asshole is he's still a likable asshole because he's just so over the top and doesn't take himself so seriously, there is a goofy playfulness to him. Scott always seemed like "hey I'm a serious artiste, bow to me" type of asshole.

My band name is The Likable Asshole.
The first single is "Half Right'.

But the voice....

I think that the Pumpkins win because the singles from Siamese Dream are better than the singles from Core. Other than that I think both bands released a lot of mediocre albums that were mostly filler tracks. I know a lot of people think Mellon Collie was genius but I always thought it was just Billy writing for angsty teenagers who thought a guy in a ZERO shirt was profound.

I find that is the big point people make when they say they don't like the smashing pumpkins. I can see that I suppose but for me personally I have always been drawn to the weird voices...Dylan, mark E. Smith, Geddy Lee all come to mind but I also dig "good" voices. i guess I just don't get hung upon vocals and perhaps view them more as another instrument perhaps.

But some of the best stuff on MCIS was the quiet and weird stuff—in addition to just the sheer audacity of putting out a sprawling, stylistically diverse double LP in the traditional style during peak alternarock. “Porcelina,” “33,” and, heck, even “1979” were pretty out of step for 1995 and that’s the stuff that makes the album work. Especially when juxtaposed with “Muzzle” and “Where Boys Fear to Tread” and “Ruby”’and whatnot.

Of course, if you mostly consumed music via MTV and local radio at the time (and a lot of people did) Billy Pumpkin was the rat in the cage guy like Cobain was the stupid and contagious guy and so on.

And in retrospect, it’s obvious that Billy swiped the zero thing from the art movement of the same name.

I lost interest in Pumpkins after Siamese Dream (although I loved that album); STP never gained my interest.

I always like SP up through Mellon Collie....STP was a band I just never really got into but friends and an ex dug them.

Saw STP on the Purple tour and it was a pretty much a crappy show.
