Yamaha buys Guild

I really like that 335-ish one on the right.
Oh me too, that's a fantastic intrument. That Starfire IV and its Blues 90 sibling were both made in 2000 at the tail end of Westerly production.

USA Guilds still represent crazy good value. I bought mine years ago but I'm sure they're still a fraction of what a comparable 335 costs.

My two Guilds. I'll never part with the 1998 DV52. There's no way I can replace it for less than $4-$5k. I really don't play enough acoustic jazz to warrant owning the 1970 x500 anymore though. I've thought about trading it for a 335-type guitar for a while.

Guilds customer for an electric is someone who is looking for retro traditional quality and mojo, probably plays electric blues. early rock n' roll, or rockabilly, maybe some Americana. All type of guitars that are already marketed with more brand recognition by Gretsch or Gibson. The kinda guy who likes a Les Paul but is open to something in the same retro ballpark might be enticed to try a Guild Aristocrat

But if they're then presented with new challenger: GretschDuoJet

Gretsch is probably going to win. They're a bit more legendary/historic (more mojo), and they are in the hands of more famous players.

The only Guild that ever actually interested me is the one that Mark played in Soundgarden. Doubt Yamaha will revive these with Gibson's latest antics.

Fender made these for a while. I tried one at a guitar store and it was thick and Les Paul heavy. I think a big selling point of the SG is that they weigh under seven pounds, so making them heavy is kind of stupid.

I have wanted a 1970s or 1980s Guild acoustic for a long time. I really should have bought one long ago.

I briefly had a 1980 D40 last year. I always wanted an older Guild, and got it in trade...it sounded AMAZING, but I didn't get along with the neck so it got sold. I'm still disappointed that it wasn't a match for me. The dude that bought it from me was completely in love with it from first strum, so I'm glad it went to a good home.

That's always nice if you have to part with something. I have fairly big hands and the Guilds that I have tried seemed to sit in my hand well. I found them a little heavy compared to some guitars that I have used over the years but most of those lighter ones are the type that I find to be fragile.

It was indeed a heavy beast, but damn it sounded amazing. And yeah, it was a neck for big hands.

I've been looking at this one for a while:

Still undecided. I tend to obsessively research and consider pros and cons, so often used stuff is long gone before I make up my mind.

I played a couple of the Korean Starfires when they first came back on the scene 7 or 8 years ago and I remember being really impressed. I already had my '00 USA but they offered one in green that looked sensational and I gave serious thought to buying one.
