What was your first computer?

The first PC I purchased myself was a fairly cheap Pentium 133 machine with Windows 98. This was in 1995 or 1996 when I was a student :embarrassed:

They had Windows 98 in 1995 or 1996? Crazy times.

My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81, with a wobbly 16K RAM extension, then I had a BBC Model B, and when I started in gradual school I treated myself to a Pentium 100 system running Slackware Linux, which was slightly cheaper than Windows and came with a free onion for your belt.

(I basically skipped the whole DOS/Windows experience, and Lord knows I've never regretted it.)

I worked with X86 pc's in work running DOS. My old boss wanted to try out a CAD based program that would let us make complicated CNC machine programs without doing all the time consuming calculations by hand. He wanted to leave me out of the loop so he started playing 'computer hostage'. The idea was that someone supposedly smarter than I would make a program for my router machine.... wheel it down to my shop..... then download the program into machine. The problem was, it didn't work the way he thought it would. The smart guy wasn't so smart in making things happen. The boss finally said to me make the damn thing work. So I did, and here I am 20 years down the road working with pretty much the same stuff.

The first computer I ever bought for myself was a secondhand Compaq 200 MHz pentium with a whopping 16Mb of RAM running win 95. I upgraded the thing as cash & platform permitted with the idea of making a gaming machine. That one lasted me about 3 years, and man did I learn a lot.

Found my box of unopened 8" floppies. What an exciting week this is gonna' be!

Wouldn't it be cool to have a large living room (some have pretty good acoustics) built around a large analog board, with furniture that could easily be folded away or moved aside, a drum kit rolled in, and off you go? Maybe more a rec room than a living room, but still.

That's pretty much my house, although I keep the console in the dining room. :embarrassed:

Sent from my iPhone at a Tijuana Donkey show. Wearing a kilt.
