What to do in Vegas?

jbj

Poor old Geordie's array...
We're spending a few weeks there over Christmas and New Year.

I don't need to hear no: "leave, it's a cesspit" type stories, I know exactly what I'm getting into and given my penchant for going to Amsterdam whenever I get the chance, it's fair to say I like a bit of seedy tackiness.

So what's worth doing?

Any must see shows?

Also - Christmas dinner: we need to book something but no idea where to start.

The Brooklyn Bowl is a bowling alley that also has good food and beverages and some shows. I saw John Hiatt and Taj Mahal there.

There is a restaurant I like called the Public House in the Venetian/Canal Shops. They have a pretty nice selection of interesting beers and spirits, and the food isn't bad either.

Also they have these big places where you can gamble like crazy, and these scantily-clad lovely ladies bring you free drinks!

Honestly there isn't much I can say. I wouldn't be able to fill a couple of days there, let alone weeks.

There are live sex shows. So do that. And machine guns in the desert. And gambling. Repeat as necessary.

Edit:
Get tickets to a Vegas Knights hockey game. They are doing very well in their first season and are chock full of talent.

Buy some really good legal pot at The Grove.

Go to the shitty-ass Silver Sevens for great burgers, strong drinks and budget gambling on the cheap. REAL VEGAS PEOPLE. THE BEST PEOPLE.

Have some of the best Thai food on the planet at Lotus of Siam.

Go to the Nuclear Testing Museum.

See a Whitesnake tribute band at Vamp'd.

See what's hanging on the wall at Ed Roman's.

Are you renting a car?

The Grand Canyon is about a five-hour drive each way.

Hoover Dam is close by.

There's a lot of desert.

Avoid outdoor country music concerts.

Vegas is real fun in short doses, but can get to be too much after a few days. Incredible restaurants, good shows. If you want to do it you can probably find it in Vegas.

There is plenty to do depending on what you want to do. I've only been twice and with my wife both times. This last time we did more outdoor stuff during the day. We went to Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. Also went to Red Rocks and Mt. Charleston. If you want to do some hiking in a cool desert place Red Rocks was pretty cool.

The hotels/casinos on the strip are a sight to see for sure. It is kind of cool to see some of those. A trip to Freemont Street can be very interesting and would fulfill the seedy piece. We did the Love show this time which was pretty cool. Shows aren't cheap so you kind of have to want to go. I think they still have Jubilee which is a more traditional Vegas show. We saw that the first time we went and liked it.

Lots of music, you just have to look around for what you want. Lots of ways to approach Vegas.

Plenty to do once you get away from the strip.

Excellent mountain biking there now that it isn't blazing hot.

Several excellent tattoo artists are there if you want something a little more permanent.

get out of town and see some of the deserts, take pics. Lake Mead also. Red Rocks is only about 20 miles away.

You can use Vegas as a hub as Death Valley is a few hours away. If you don't want to drive to the Grand Canyon, you can do a fly over. Hoover Dam was already mentioned. There are lots of things that are not gambling oriented. Great places to eat. I forget the name, but the best buffet in the world is at one of the casinos there. Should be easy to find out. Enjoy!

If you're looking to get away from the city and see some natural wonders, go to Zion National Park. 2:26 drive from LV. IMHO, it's a better park than the GC. North Rim is very cool, too, but it is less accessible due to the sheer size of the canyon. Also, the North Rim closes on December 1 (for the winter).

I've never spent time in LV (other than the airport and grabbing lunch at a restaurant), so I don't have an recommendations for things to do in the city.

Love is an amazing show. That’s the Beatles themed Cirque show, but there’s not to much circus to it, which is a good thing.
My wife was just there with her sister and they saw One, the Michael Jackson Cirque show and they thought it was spectacular. Warning, there’s hologram content.

If you like magic, Mac King is the best in town. He does a clean family-safe show, but he’s funny and he’s a great magician. Penn and Teller highly recommend him. Speaking of which, go see Penn and Teller. They are a blast and they do a meet and greet immediately after the show and stay until everyone is happy.
Another to consider is Matt Franco. Great show.

Nine Fine Irishmen in the NY NY hotel and casino is fun for food and drinks.
Sadly, they’ve taken the Pail of Sausage of the menu, though.

Mexican food? http://lindomichoacan.com/
The original is on East Desert Inn Road. I’ve been to that one a few times. My wife just went to the one in Henderson. Her cousin is local and that’s the one he prefers now.

Red Rock Canyon is beautiful and a lot closer than Grand Canyon.

The big Ferris wheel is worth it for the sights. I think there is a pass that you can get that will let you ride twice in a day.
So, once in daylight and once at night. Don’t quote me on that though.
