That’s a really hypnotic/lovely song, I dig! I can certainly cop those tones with my old Vibro Champ, the onboard tremolo is the best I’ve ever experienced, it’s really gorgeous and has great range. I may have just had bad luck with those Princetons because I’ve heard others get great sounds out of them…they may have been biased too cold, and the tremolo was also kind of subdued and lackluster vs. my Vibro. The scenery in that vid looks a lot like where I live, inland in SoCal out towards the desert…also reminds me of the Mazzy Star Fade Into You vid.

But yeah, I’ve found the Ric to be very inspiring! I don’t find it particularly difficult to play despite its quirks, it def. coaxes different things out of my playing in a same sort of way that a Jazzmaster/Jag does…and I like that, it’s a guitar that will break you out of ruts. I’m not doing big bluesy bends or anything like that with it, more of the arpeggiated and linear type stuff and focusing more on chord voicings etc. It can def. rock though, but w/ a lot of clarity and focus. Totally unique to anything else I’ve ever played tonally or feelwise, I really wish I had picked one up years ago!

Yeah, that Marty Stuart song's an awesome, hypnotic Doors/Chris Isaak/Byrds/Marty Robbins amalgam. I absolutely love it. I really dig the video too, and Mazzy Star's 'Fade Into You' vid as well. On that subject, do you live anywhere near the Salton Sea? I was watching this L.A. Witch video and thought 'is that the Salton Sea'? This video has great visuals.

I love to hear about what you're doing with your Ric. I really need to get some playing time with one.

Loved that song and the abandoned structures/desolate scenery, I like to photograph subject matter like that whenever I have the opportunity. There’s def. a very distinct energy when you get out into those really sparse desert areas and stretches, it’s really unlike anything else…a calmness but a little spooky at the same time. The Salton Sea is about an hour and a half from where we live (I’ve lived in Riverside since 2017, Orange County from ‘89 to ‘04), but I’ve never been there. I’ve driven through the desert countless times en route to Vegas or Laughlin, have always enjoyed the sites and drive. Now that you brought it up, I think we’ll have to go soon…I’ve watched a few documentaries about it, the history is really interesting. It also brought to mind this old Bourdain episode with Josh Homme out in the desert:

I played the Ric almost exclusively the first month I had it, I finally gave it a rest and have been playing a few other guitars this past week or so. But I’m itching to get it out again already, there’s something about it that draws me to it…I’m sure to do with the unique feel and distinct sound, I never found myself getting tired of it at all.
