Of course cobbling together a shitty rocket from cheap parts and blowing yourself to bits with your shoddy workmanship trying to do something that has been done a gazillion times before is perfectly sound and valuable science.

On the surface, one would think "They're just flat earthers, where's the harm in that?" Well, the harm comes when they teach this crap to their kids. Now that poor child will go through years of constant ridicule, thinking the earf is flat. Thanks mom and dad!

And make no mistake, these people are part of the same bunch who also don't believe in science in any form. They can't crunch the numbers, so they simply reject it all. Without getting into delicate territory on the forums, I'll just point out they also think our passenger airlines fly on compressed air and are spraying us with sinister chemicals :embarrassed:

I was pretty impressed with how well that home-built steam-powered rocket did. Unfortunately the landing chute ripped itself to shreds during launch. But when your first test flight and first crewed (and crude) flight are all the same mission, your chances of survival are slim to none.

Even so, the whole thing was stupid. There wasn't a chance in hell he was going to reach enough altitude to see anything special. Commercial flights go higher than his rocket's peak altitude. There are mountains 20 miles from his launch site that would have provided a better vantage point than his rocket. Balloons tied to a lawn chair would have served him just as well.

I've dealt with these bozos many times. They are convinced that only they know the real truth and the rest of the world (sheep) are ignorant.

YouTube can be a wonderful learning tool, and a source for great entertainment. Why YT allows these flat earth channels to categorize themselves as "science" or "education" is beyond me though. They should all be under "comedy".

I loved the FAA's response, which read as a polite version of "nope, not touching this one".
 
1) he was never going to get to an altitude that you can readily see the curvature.
2) even if he did get there, what exactly was he going to be breathing? (hypoxia begins at around 12,000 feet and that's well short of curvature viewing)
 
I wish I could ask him if it made any difference when it was rushing up at him at lethal velocities...

I believe he was one of those flat-earthers that claims the Earth is a disc, so I'm not sure even LEO (completely impossible with steam-twit tech) would have convinced him otherwise.

Listening to the crowd's reaction makes me realize that this guy's ignorance made others go through watching him die.
I've seen people die in person and it's a horrible thing to experience.
