Achtung! The September Punk Recordingfest REVEAL!!!

Wilmer, well I can't say 6:30 is too long for punk since mine was even longer, haha. Execution is great but without more instrumental visceral attack (and/or abetted by snotty/angry lyrics/vocals) this is more arty/proggy than punk, even though I liked it and especially with the concept/backstory explained.

G.E. and Missus Smiff:

Who knew the Missus could sing? The choppy guitars during the chorus and stop/starts reminded me of modern punk like Face to Face (but of course w/female vox).

"Sedated" is one of my all-time fave songs, and one I played (and sang-- not nearly as well as you!) at my very first gig 30 years ago. The harmony vox make this version. Props for including the one-note lead, I know I would be tempted to mess with that line, haha.

Hadn't heard "Pepper" before, the BSurfers have always been on the trippy fringe of punk and this certainly does that well. I had flashbacks.

Knox-- I definitely hear the Cure similarities you pointed out. I like your vox, they're idiosyncratic but that's a good thing, too many "punk" songs out there with no edge to the vocals. The plinky lead reminded me of the Circle Jerks cameo in the lounge scene in Repo Man. I'da brought the rhythm guitar up a bit though.

If you get a chance, check the acoustic only version. I actually seem to like that a bit better after repeated listenings.

ASP- this reminded me a bit of Public Image Ltd., without the annoying (not that there's anything wrong with that) Rotten vox of course. The tribal drum beat was cool. The stop and cut to the little proggy bit took me by surprise, but surprises are a good thing.

Brian Krashpad: I think I listened to Buffy's Dead. The song was cool to listen to. I guess you do a lot of performing live.

Thanks. It's more that I hardly ever do any studio recording (and zero home recording, because I wouldn't even know where to begin!), than that I play live a lot. I envy y'all (for Northerners: youse guys) who can crank something out at home!

When Crash Pad is going full steam we might gig once or twice a month. I'd been "on hiatus" from Crash Pad gigs for about 8 months, because I had throat cancer (1 tonsil & lymph nodes removed, followed by chemo/radiation), and wanted to make sure I could get through a set singing lead (I played guitar in church weekly pretty much all through the layoff, and started back in with my side bands, wherein I don't sing lead, a few months before I did with Crash Pad). I still have some radiation burn soreness in my mouth, and they managed to nuke one of my saliva glands permanently, but I lost about 50 pounds through the whole business so I'm actually more healthy now than I was before!

The show the recording is from was Crash Pad's 125th (assuming I didn't miss any in my count; my second one back after the hiatus), but that's over a span of 15 years (albeit, to be fair, there's probably been well over a couple years worth of down time in there easily, between the cancer and downtime for the many personnel changes), so you can do the math.

A "road warrior" I ain't but I do have a jones for playing live!

By the way, if anyone cares, I used my Epiphone Wilshire Limited with the BG Pups P-90s for this project...

I think I used my LP Standard through the Classic 30 for all the guitars in all three of my entries. Jazz bass direct with a Sansamp plugin, my Pulse drums mic'd mostly with Shure PG mics, but with an Audix D6 on the kick...and a little splash of MIDI instrumentation for Pepper.

Oh, thanks to the rest of you guys not using Soundclick, the whole 23 plays of my tune has catapulted Candy Man to #1 in the Punk charts! Who knew fame would come so easily?! This is, indeed, a day of glory... :) Time to quit my day job and hit the road...

Thanks to all. I had fun. I knew it wouldn't really be a song that anyone on here would be all that into, but I thought it was fun, and really those fast lyrics are kind of a challenging tongue twister.

I am really hopoing to get better and someday really be able to start contributing more than just vocals, but for now those are really fun.

If you keep with it, I guarantee you'll get better! You're already light years past me when I started doing vocals. I can tell you're still a little tentative sometimes, but that just comes with practice. More than any other "instrument" it's been my experience (fwiw, ymmv) that singing is the one where you most benefit by simply doing it.

And actually, I thought that song was pretty cool. I woulda never pegged it for a Josie & the Pussycats song. Was it from the movie?

I was really hoping to have one of the GreenDay Songs ready for this month with me playing guitar, but it just didn't quite polish out the way I wanted it to, so I'll just have to record it seperately.

Yeah, it was from the movie.

P.S. - I am looking for a good Gem and the Holograms song just to spite you Reverend1!

Oh, and for those who really needed to know, all my guitar work was done with my $84 Squier '51.

Didn't help matters any that we put it off until the last minute, and then the electricity was out from Sunday evening until Monday evening.

Fwiw, our live backline and axes for Buffy's Dead (and the entire Labor Daze Fest show it appeared in) were:

Drums: Bun E. Carlos signature Ludwig kit
Lead guitar: Gibson Les Paul Classic into Sovtek Tube Midget 50W tube head and Risson 4x12
Rhythm guitar: Gibson SG into Fender Stage 100 solid state DSP head into Fender 4x12
Bass: Epiphone Thunderbird bass through Crate BX-200 solid state head and '70's Ampeg 8x12 fridge cab (note: all this bass gear is mine loaned to our bassist).

Oh, and for the swirly windy kind of noises during the verses of Pepper, I just turned on the Classic 30, cranked it all the way up on the gain channel with all knobs cranked, and just recorded the amp hiss. Then normallized the amp hiss up to about -2db and stuck a phase plugin and reverb on it. :embarrassed:
