The Never Ending Gig Thread!

Just got back from a private party gig - a pig roast/birthday party. It was at a really nice house way out in the boonies about 90 minutes from here. They have a bit of land - probably about 5 - 10 acres. There were about 60 - 70 people there, lots of food and three kegs of beer, which may not even be enough. Almost everyone was really nice, and really drunk by the end. A lot of people brought tents or trailers and were spending the night. They had a huge bon fire going and were had a decent number of people dancing at any given time. We had a few PA issues, but by the second set all seemed to be in better shape. And we only had a couple of lights so that pain in the ass was not an issue at all. Now we START playing our next gig (car show) in less than ten hours (from now) - that does not include two hours setup time. I'm going to be one tired puppy tomorrow afternoon....

sounds like a good night!

and a loooonnnggg day.
I don't envy you that part at all.

kickin' ass though:grin:

My karaoke gigs have been OK over the weekend.

It's amazing how much nicer a job it is when the assholes aren't out in force. :thu:

We had a good gig last night. Ash is a new man since he dumped Yoko. We're going to practice this evening and we have 4 or 5 new songs to work on, 6 songs I guess counting Are You Gonna Be My Girl and Hashpipe which are two I'm going to sing bringing my total up to 4 songs that I sing lead on. I'm almost a real singer. lol

Well - gig number two went pretty well. It was an unpaid gig at a car show/chili cookoff at a club the band wants to start playing at. They did give us a $50.00 bar tab for the band so I was able to get a beer at our first set break. We could all hear ourselves better today so it really felt from the band point of view. When I wandered out from the stage area (concrete walkway in front of empty stores in a strip mall) it sounded pretty good but the keyboards were way too loud and he refused to turn them down. The price we pay with no sound person and the keyboard player controlling the soundboard. The only downside of the gig was that my side of the stage ended up in the full sun for most of the sets, and that got hot after awhile. The reaction of the crown was really good. It was not a 'dancing' crowd or event but we had a lot of people ask where we were playing next and got some good compliments. Hopefully the club manager liked us at well and it will lead to future gigs (which was the main point of the free show to begin with).

I'm pretty fried at this point...

Good to hear everyone had decent gigs this weekend.

Next weekend I'm traveling to Santa Inez to play a wedding and bringing the family for the overnight trip; http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...Dg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&ved=0CAQQ_BI

Should be fun. :)

I'll do a short report on gig #1 from today. This was the country band playing at 10:embarrassed:0AM at a local festival. We had a nice stage and the sound was pretty good on stage as well. Not a big crowd, but we had some people (we don't know - friends/family don't count) stick around for the entire show. Our lead singer had both his vocal and guitar wireless systems go fubar during the set, but other than that it went pretty well. The band that followed us had some very impressive equipment. their lead playing had a Soloway and a Mike Lull electric(and he has another Soloway at home and one more on order) and really nice amp and a ton of high end pedals. The other guitar player had an Anderson electric and a one off custom acoustic as well as a 800 series Taylor. A lot of money in equipment for that band...

Here are a few pics from the show.

And - lets see. We had two gigs with the country band last weekend, one this weekend, and two in two week. And the keyboard player wants to rehearse next Saturday afternoon. Not gonna happen. I have stuff to do and only two shows left with them. I will have a gig report on this evenings show with the rock band tomorrow. I wanna go to bed now....

Nice!

I'm too tired to do a report right now and I'm waiting to be taken back to the hotel. Maybe tomorrow. Or check out the "oven mitt" thread.

Last night was the 9th show in 11 days. One of those days was a double header (Green Bay, then Kenosha).

OK - time for the second Saturday gig report.

This was a block party in the subdivision where we practice - and is only about a block from the house where I practice with the country band (same subdivision). We got all setup in a driveway of a house in a cul-de-sac that was all blocked off for the party. We were supposed to start playing at 5:embarrassed:0. At about 4:30 it started sprinkling very lightly. I move my amp under the EZ-UPs we had put up for the band. By about 4:45 it started raining harder so we moved all the equipment except the speakers and soundboard (which were covered in plastic bags) towards the middle of the shelters. By 5:embarrassed:0 it started raining hard. We were disassembling drums and pulling cables on amps and monitors and throwing everything into the garage behind us. My pedal board got wet, but not soaked. We endured through about a 30 minute hard rain storm before it started to taper off. and even then it was still cloudy. We waited a good 15 minutes before we started dragging stuff out of the garage. Plus a lot of people had gone home at that point. We finally had everything set back up and fired up by close to 6:30, which was when we were supposed to start our second set. Gradually the crowd returned though it never got very large (maybe 50 people). The country band keyboard player lives about a block away and knew I was playing and never showed up.

Anyway - we finally got everything started without anyone getting electrocuted and remained rain free for the rest of the evening. We had to tweak a few levels but we got at least a decent sound pretty quick. It was not a paid gig but we did get free food and we got a better feel for stuff we need to iron out before we hit the clubs. One thing was that our sound guy also plays harmonica. he has a couple of songs he plays on during the practices. During the show he was running up with his harmonica constantly when he had never played that song before. That caused some confusion when I didn't know who was supposed to take a solo - me or him. We also have a few song endings to work out. But overall it went pretty well with a few hickups. When I was singing/playing 'Mary Jane's Last Dance' I went to dive into the solo and my 'G' string was suddenly really flat (the guitar one....). That threw me off for the start of the solo because I use that string a lot, but I got through it and tuned before the end solo. I had a couple solos that I was pretty happy with which is unusual for me. One issue I need to hammer out is my solo boost. On the songs where I sing and play the solo ('Mary Jane..' and 'Hey Jealousy') I hit the solo boost, play the solo, but the vocals come back in rather quickly after the solo so I don't have time to see the pedal board and hit the wrong pedal on 'Hey jealousy' (I turned on the delay instead of turning off the boost).

Overall it went better than expected. the crowd really liked it and kept asking for more tunes. We ended up doing three 'encores' - 'I'm Not Over', Stormy Monday', and 'War Pigs'. We did about thirty songs total and have a few more we could have done so we are edging closer to gigging in clubs. A good evening despite the wet beginnings.

Very cool! Sounds like you're on your way with that band.

Had a feeling YOU of all people would notice that, Dave! the middle pickup is not stock. Sometimes I wish I hadn't done it...BUT it plays and sounds great, so it's a good utility instrument. Looks positively TINY on me, though.

Dave! Y'all play "I'm Not Over"?! LOVE that one!! And 3 encores? NICE.

And cool pics, Psychotronic!!

Jaxn, that line 6 wedge DIY job sounds like a good plan :thu:
