The first "oops" of the Olympic Games.

I think this will be interesting to watch in terms of "what trainwreck will actually happen"? Russia surely hasn't done themselves any favors with how this has been run (on any level).
But didn't they just award Sochi the World Cup? It's nuts.

Fuck the Olympics.
Fuck the IOC.
Fuck the athletes.
Double-fuck Putin.

The whole thing is a goddamn disgusting affair.

Andy and I are very kindred spirits so I totally see where he is coming from. The same things that he finds disgusting about this particular event, I do too.

However, I still have the same appreciation for the history of the games. Sure, the legitimacy of certain events has been diluted by allowing professional athletes to take part, but overall the Olympics are still foundationally a place where nations come together in the spirit of friendly competition.

Despite the politics and the shady dealings and the sometimes objectionable actions of the host country, the games are positive force for celebrating inclusion and diversity. Something the world could use more of...

I'll watch when mud wrestling is finally given its due along side ice dancing and synchronized swimming as a legitimate sport.

Oh, and the one hand bra clasp release race. Gotta have that, too.

And sexual rodeo. A must for any serious sports fan. *

*For those who don't know what sexual rodeo is...mount the wife from behind, say "Funny. You look just like your sister from this angle" and try to stay on for seven seconds.

The 2018 World Cup is in Russia yes. Not nearly as much of a clusterfuck as the 2022 WC in Qatar though.
If there was ever an organization more corrupt than the IOC....

Seriously...

FIFA and the IOC are pretty much neck and neck as far as obvious corruption goes.

As for the Olympics...

The only good thing that comes out of it as far as I can see is giving a few obscure sports a international platform for a few minutes they would not otherwise have. When the Olympics were restarted the 'bringing the nations together' was legitimate. In this day and age of easy international travel most sports have championship tournaments every year or multiple times a year anyways. I honestly do not feel that the Olympics are necessary any longer - especially considering the enormous money sink they have become.

I think something worth thinking about...

Russia made a lot of progress w/r/t human rights in the 20 years following the collapse of the USSR. It wasn't fast progress, but it was seemingly real progress. Homosexuals were starting to live openly. This regression (with a vengeance) has really only happened in the past 5 years or so, as Putin's grasp has tightened. It's hard to have 20/20 vision, but when Sochi was selected, many were ambivalent yet optimistic: "well, there are some real problems, but we've come a long way, let's celebrate that." So much for that, I guess.

Still, it's probably better than Moscow '80 on all accounts, both for the Russian people today, and for the absence of a boycott.

The IOC isn't even close to Sepp Blatter. This is the man who got rid of his opponent at the last election as FIFA president, leaving him as the only option possible.
A master of dim suggestions when it comes to a sport an entire world (excluding the US obviously) loves.
His best one last year? Women football players should play with shorter shorts. Jesus. :embarrassed:

Not to mention him being extremely opposed to anything that might be beneficial to the sport (such as goal line technology).

So he's like the NHL's Gary Bettmann.

Bettman needs to be fired.

Out of a canon.

Into a titanium-reinforced brick wall.

I think I get where you are coming from, but I don't think it's fair to hate on the athletes. They have worked and sacrificed for years to get this opportunity. As a matter of fact I think the US sending a gay delegation says more than boycotting the games would. Just my .02
I agree. The athletes have done nothing wrong. For many of them this is their one shot, and they put a lifetime of training into their sport. Sure there are some pros, but for the most part there are still a lot of amateurs. They should get their chance to compete free of all the other bs that is now part of the games.

Don't forget Bernie Ecclestone. I like F1 and he made it what it is today, but seriously that guy needs to go.

Yup. Don't hate on the athletes, they've done nothing wrong. Not their fault it happens to take place in Sotchi.

I think athletes pulling out in protest will have a bigger long-term effect than the attitude of "well, we'll just show THEM why we do things better." I understand they've worked and trained for a long time, but I strongly believe that competing in the face of corruption, intimidation, and inhumane exterminations is incredibly selfish.

Sent from none of your fuckin' business!

Jesse Owens running 100m faster than a few hundredths of a second faster than the next guy made more of a long-term impact than any boycott or political gesture ever could. And Christ knows it's been attempted.

That's the magic of sport. The stories get told better that way.

Agreed. His 4 gold medals are the most remembered aspect of the 1936 Olympics. He completely overshadowed and embarrassed the Nazi's.

And what do we remember of the 1980 Olympics?

The t-shirt is already out.
