The Enduring metal genius of Metallica

Who else has tried listening to 72 Seasons? I made it to Lux Æterna before I got ear fatigue and turned it off. And that includes having it off for over an hour when I picked the kids up from school and took my daughter out to lunch. I just can’t fuck with Hetfield’s new vocal style. Mustaine has aged a lot better than his old band.

I stopped half way through Crown.

Dave has kept a fresh crop of talent around him. I’ve thought Dave always came up with more detailed and challenging guitar work. Dave’s subject matter seems more real and thought provoking. Metallica seems like mental health counseling sessions.

Wow, I just listened Reload. Not much difference. Even in the voice. The only different attempt in their music since has been St. Anger.

I didn't bother to read the whole thread but I've been listening to portions of the latest album that I had no idea existed and honestly it's not terrible. These guys have been making music for a very long time.
Their newest (to me) single 72 seasons I renamed 72 riffs. Listen to it if you will.
Maybe it's not even a single. I discover music differently.
Anyway, it's not awful all things considered. They're doing what they do. Good on them for lasting. Raise your hand if you're in a band that has been platinum as long as them.
Edit: Like them or their latest or not, they sell records. Same could be said about the Stones and many others.

I noticed they dropped a new song thanks to Justin Hawkin's YT.

Are they a metal band these days or a bluesy hard rock outfit? IDK honestly asking to folks that have been keeping up the with Metallica releases.

Sounds like they're going for a Judas Priest thing a la 'Freewheel Burning' or 'Hell Bent for Leather'.

I made it 15 minutes or so in and switched it off. It sounds ( both songwriting and production) like someone took samples from a stock ‘metal’ library and stitched everything together clumsily. It’s bland, derivative and boring. Repeating uninteresting riffs for 10 minutes does not make a great song. They clearly did not have anyone to edit them.

It’s bland and just tedious.

Ok @VoidTerraFirma, I know you are a big Metallica fan, but you surely can’t think this is a good album?

Yeah this isn't a good one. It's the same song 12 times. It's not a bad song but we were done once we heard Lux Aeterna.

I miss the musicality of late 80's Metallica. They should go back an embrace some proggy instincts. Maybe we lost that forever with Cliff.

I think this is the deal for most bands. There are certainly exceptions for lots of bands/artists who continually change and evolve but most don't , then again most bands aren't around continuously for 40 plus years. The other thing is that this is uncharted waters for a metal band....to be around this long and playing a high energy form of music with grey hair, back aches and digestion problems, not to mention failing eyesight and early stage alzheimers......

That's what I mean. They have evolved but only towards ever increasing commercialisation and trying to write stadium anthems all the time. I'd like to see them change it up. Slow things down sometimes. Try a few more 10 minute instrumentals.

They are way past that though. I'm not saying you can't be old and be creative cuz clearly you can but when you have been around 40 years , especially at the top like Metallica then you are established. The time long ago passed for them to change it up. I think it's kinda hard to change it up organically if you have the same band members which Metallica has had the core three. perhaps the reason they had slight changes was due to the change of bass players over the years but in metallica the bass player didn't get much input I'm guessing.
Take a band like the Fall...they had constant line up changes with basically two core members. In a situation like that the change comes naturally due to the dynamics of the group.

I mean when people listen to ACDC they listen for the ACDC sound good or bad....same for metallica.

I made it through a handful of tracks and have to agree with most all of this
