The Biking Thread

I am just a lumpy mountain biker in cargo shorts (listening to Pearl Jam, gratuitous Bike Snob reference), and my group ride was on the dirt. Fl0g the horse up the single track climbs to keep up. I was the scrappy Dad built like an Alpine skier trying to keep up with guys that looked like cyclists. But, I managed to crawl off the very back of the pack to end up mid pack before the ride quit. But I can sure tell I am not pushing myself without the group ride now. That was a Thursday night ride. There is a Wednesday night road ride with three groups of increasing intensity out of a Ketchum shop. I could start going to that and start in the easier or maybe mid crew and see where it goes. I will have to show up with hairy legs, perhaps baggy shorts, and no bicycle NASCAR stuff on my shirt. Just becuz. I MIGHT be convinced to wear a traditional chamois. Mebbe. Not sure about that.

Well I need to get back into mountain biking. I haven't been up in the local mountains in too long. Somehow I gave up on my tubeless tire leak and just left the bike hanging in the garage, unwilling to buy a new tire. I think I'll get it out this next week and do some climbing.

The road training does make a big difference in mountain biking. Good cross training.

I gained 10 pounds that won't go away! :old:

I've been upping my volume over the last few weeks.
The last week of April, 168 miles/9 hours, 20 minutes. Last week, 127 miles/7 hours, 10 minutes. This week so far, 62 miles.
Yesterday was a "Most Excellent" ride!

It has been warming up here lately. Soon, the dreaded humidity will attack.

In the summer we have to start all rides by 8am at the latest. I'm kind of lazy sometimes so I have been known to do some mountain fire roads climb in the afternoon in 110 degree F heat. I used to do that a lot until a friend explained to me that getting cold chills at the top of the climb is a sign of getting close to heat stroke.

Our group rides start at 7:30 AM due to the heat.

This time of year is when I see the most heat related problems since we're not used to it yet. Here's a reminder about heat exhaustion versus heat stroke:

Heat exhaustion is the body's response to an excessive loss of water and salt contained in sweat. Signs include profuse sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, a weak-but-rapid pulse and fainting. The skin may be cool and moist. If heat exhaustion is untreated, it may progress to heat stroke.

Heat stroke occurs when the body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating system fails, and the body is unable to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106°F or higher within 10 to 15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not given. Heat stroke symptoms include an extremely high body temperature (above 103°F, orally), red, hot and dry skin (no sweating), rapid and strong pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion and unconsciousness.

Looks like a great ride! Pretty flat though, by my standards.

That's how I feel. I pulled a few off, but I am sitting at 188 something and want to be just under 180. I have tightened up the diet in terms of sweets, carbs, particularly any refined carbs (though I did have half a tortilla with my salmon and greens half wrap at lunch), and reduced beer and wine by quite a bit. Not coming off as fast as normal. But thinking I will just stay the course and let it come off more slowly this time, as I continue good eating and habits, and get more riding in. Brown rice instead of pasta or any white rice or bread, etc. The fast, then veggies/greens only (not even fruit) no alcohol or coffee at all thing does get things moving. But it is not sustainable for me long run.

I don't know how you guys manage the selfies on the bike. I wouldn't touch my phone while moving...similar to driving there is enough going on to kill me that I don't need to add to the excitement .

I obviously didn't. And I quit trying before I went down in a heap.

And for the love of Gawd, can we all agree????? No white kits. NO!

And, @Mark Wein , get in here and get on your dang bike! Nothing hard corps, just get out there and pedal.

I have 2 white jerseys does that count? One has some orange and black on it though...no logos though

But I wear baggies and they aren't white (yeah I know I ride a road bike). Actually I would wear just shorts but they get a tad uncomfortable after about 30 miles. For the rides to the gym though it's gym shorts and Tshirts (and a backpack). I couldn't and wouldn't go all TdF like most road cyclists as I've said before I like pockets.

A tasteful white jersey is just fine. Though traditional jerseys are not normally my preference any more. Just the white Chamois is the part that is just so wrong.

I never use a phone while riding. The 360 cam I use is super easy to operate without looking at it.

I have a few mostly white jerseys for hot, sunny rides. Except for a few old team kits that I no longer wear, I take my shorts like I take my men... Black! :embarrassed:

If one is truly a member of a real team, any kit that is team issue is fine. Though I still think white pants is a bad choice.

I have had club gear, but jerseys only, when our group used to ride together. I miss those days.

Now, as far as team wear goes, the only thing I think would be fun would be a modified 7-11 team jersey. But as those guys seemed so legendary and bad ass at the time, I would not deem myself worth to sport their colors. Someone might think it was some sort of statement. Rather than plan inspiration/admiration. I hope Mr. Phinney is doing well with his disease.

Also, pretty funny what race is featured in the beginning of this clip.

PS, I thought I had missed out on riding today. The weather closed out. But opened back up! Gonna go climb a hill while I still have some light!

I thought it was a phone...though I have to ask...what's the different between taking a picture while riding with your phone and a cam???

My white short sleeve jersey is for hot days too, the long sleeve one is for cold days...for really cold days I wear a regular Tshirt over that. For even colder days I wear a jacket. If it's too cold for the jacket/shorts it's too cold to ride. It's supposed to be for fun after all.

It has one button, so even drummers could possibly operate one.
I'd post an image of one, but this iPad Safari thing makes it difficult to capture a URL.

Just did first ride since Sept. 2015. Pretty leisurely 9.6 miles. Lots of deer. Been getting up really early in anticipation so I can beat the heat/tar but it's pretty light even at 5. *spits*

Last time I came back from a hiatus, it was five years. The first day I rode two miles. The next day I rode 42... in blue jeans. That was a mistake. :embarrassed:

I have been starting to get some good rides in, mostly mountain bike. Lots of great flowers and good dirt this time of year. Mostly just riding, but have felt the feeling of pushing it with energy in the last few rides, so that means I am getting my legs back. Onward and upward!
