OK, you gun toting conservative hillbillies... Both my pistols are from WWII era, very accurate, but old... I want a new semi automatic to open carry in the national forest and on BLM land... I literally am on the edge of the forest, and a trail head is about 100 yards away... I do a lot of hiking, mountain biking, dirt biking, and 4 wheeling, and I have seen a huge mountain lion back there, as well as huge wild boar... Of course, there are humans back there sometimes, too... Not too huge or heavy is a plus, but it needs to kill if needed, not piss off...

Any recommendations?

I'm not a big handgun guy. Never owned one. A couple of cops in my family, however, and they both insist on carrying .357 revolvers. They still don't trust autos when their own life is on the line.
That's all I got.

But, it seems like the .40 SW is the caliber of choice for most these days. 9mm is still pretty popular, too, but does not hit as hard.
If I'm looking at a mountain lion, I'd want a magnum. I'm a believer in doing the job with one shot whenever possible.

I'm not a big gun guy at all, but my dad taught me to shoot and respect them, and out in no-mans-land, I'll go ahead use my right to protect myself... Hmmm... Yea, a revolver is certainly more reliable... Good point... You really shouldn't need more than 6 immediate shots out there, anyways... More than anything, you need a single shot to scare a big animal... In fact, some people carry canned horns, which would startle the shit out of me, too!

Yeah, most things just need spooked enough to leave.
Mountain lions can be different, though. And they're big! I've only encountered one once. It want interested in me, but it was close enough to scare the crap outta me.
Bobcats and coyotes run. Mountain lions and wolves can ruin your whole day.

for a field protection gun it's gotta be at least a .357 magnum...9mm, .40 .45ACP are anti-personel rounds that won't drop game...revolvers in the heavier calibers are pretty much all that's available...

My game pistol is this...

Yea, that last cat I saw was about 6 feet long from nose to butt... I had to stop my truck while it casually crossed the road, and I would have been really intimidated by that one if I wasn't in my truck... I have come across them while hiking, but that was years ago when I was young and literally had no fear... These days, I have fear! Actually, the wild boar are scary as hell, and can get to 700+ pounds... Also, I've come across wild cows and bulls while dirt riding, and that can scare the shit out of you... I have seen a lot of bears, but they tend to run if you throw a rock at them, unless there are cubs around...

Check this bad boy out... Accepts shells and slugs, 7 shots, revolver...
