I love that finish. It reminds me of my Carvin.

note: I was going to post a pic of my Carvin for reference, but got a message that the pic was too large?

I saw Suicidal Tendencies open for QueensRyche whey back in the day. "I only wanted a Pepsi."

What pickups in that thing? How's it sound?

EG

These are narrowfields, which is a PRS design. Here's a bit from their site:

"We wanted a 57/08™; to sound like a singlecoil, but the hum wasn't acceptable," Paul Reed Smith explains. "What we got was something that sounds like a humbucker, P90, singlecoil, and mini-humbucker – the best traits of all combined. We were ecstatic." Welcome to the world of Narrowfield®, the latest step in the evolution of sound. It's a new PRS format that uses the same wire as 57/08s®, but squeezes the width of the pickup from pole to pole and goes deeper. Looking for exceptional clarity? You found it. Yearning to hear that full-on pick attack? We've got you covered."

I will say that, as far as the sound goes, I don't hear P-90 tones or normal humbucker tones, though those are the tones I specifically didn't want, so that's good. :) They really strike me as a noise-free single coil in their tone, but with the increased output of a mini, without the bite of a P-90 or the fullness of a humbucker. All in all, I like it a lot, and it's very different than anything else I have, which was entirely the point. :thu:

You're so considerate.

Damn. I had a couple of nice days and got some painting done on the gold top, now the weather has gone to shit again. at least it ought to be well cured and ready for polish by the time I'm done.

I read about those narrowfields. Interesting idea.
I think it's cool that they keep coming up with new stuff and aren't just rehashing the same crap over and over.

I will also say that as the increased output drives the amp, I'm getting a lot more breakup at lower settings through my amp and pedals, especially my boost pedal, than I get from singles. So, kinda mini-like in that capacity, but still sounding much like a single coil.

And yes, I agree. PRS has their fair share of detractors, and that's fine. But Paul is constantly working on tweaking everything, from major projects like designing new pickups (which he does often - to include shape and size and winding), to the material that goes into the nut, to everything in between. There's constant innovation coming out of that place. Of course, the sound and aesthetics you get from that is entirely subjective.

Here's a question re: the gold top.
What I did on the back was to mix up kind of a darker version of the color that was there. I call it black cherry; it's a mix of black and blood red dye.
The back and sides I did opaque to mask the sanding screwups on it. What I have done with the neck right now is to kinda fade it back to the original color as it goes up the neck. There's a somewhat mottled appearance as it goes and by the time it gets to the headstock, it's back to the original cherry.
I did that mainly so I could leave all the lettering and serial number intact on the back of the headstock.
The headstock front is still the original gloss black.

Just wanted to make sure the fade job is cool. I can send a pic if it sounds confusing. I think it's a cool look, but it's not a standard factory look with the fade.
I could do the opaque black cherry all the way up but it would cover the lettering and such on the back of the headstock. The fade seemed like the most logical way to handle it.

I can never get smilies to work here. Just read the FAQ, and wanted to test typing it in, just clicked the facepalm for the hell of it, and it worked this time. They never work for me. What's up with that.

That's totally fine. There's not much about this thing that's standard factory anymore, so it's all good. I'd rather have the stuff visible on the back of the headstock so that was a good call.

I dunno what's with the smilies, Bob.
:bert:

Heel, do you want a gloss or satin topcoat? I could do gloss with a satin neck if you like the slicker feel.

EG

I'm actually not a fan of satin on the back of the neck. I prefer either natural wood/tung oil, or gloss. I like a little traction back there. :) As for the front, I'll leave that up to you. I like both, but maybe it would look the best uniform?
