crazy long. My day is 12 hours from the time I leave the house to the time I get back home, and I think that's too long.

That is too long... But, ya gotta do wacha gotta do... I put in a lot of years doing the 40 hour/week grind, spending 3 to 4 hours in Los Angeles traffic every day, and working all weekend on side jobs... I was miserable, but clawing my way up... I still have to work, but not nearly as much, these days, and I don't do any of that freeway commuting...

Yeah, and this is with an awesome commute. I've only got a 15-minute bus ride. Before we moved back to the city about 9 months ago, I was working the same hours with a 1.5 hour commute. Did that for 2.5 years. That was enough.

You picked a tough field, that's for sure... Self-employment definitely takes a certain kind of attitude, and is not always fun... I guess I never thought much different... My dad was a contractor, and my mom, sister, and brother all have their own businesses... My sole purpose of becoming an electrician's apprentice at 23 was to move up, get licensed, and do my own thing... Of course, I get to crawl in attics and under houses on a very regular basis... That part ain't so fun, but it comes with the territory, since I don't want to have employees, and I don't want a desk job...

My brother in law runs a pool service company. He's busy as hell right now closing pools for the season, but after that, it's dead til spring. He has to make all his money for the year from April-November.
