Tell me about hollow bodies

Gas Hed

One of the Final Five
Actually, I'm not even sure this is a true hollow body. Came across one at local G.C. and had fun playing it. I like the look and the feel. The sound was good too, but I'm a pick-up snob so I'd likely change them out. What does adding a hollow body to my collection do? I simply have a Strat, Tele, Les Paul, and E.B. Music Man to cover my bases. Wondering if hollow bodies (other than for Jazz) have a distinct rock tone?

I think that's a semi hollow. The difference between a semi hollow and a solid aren't that huge. Many will argue with me over that, but most semi hollows are only hollow on the outside wings.
To me, you don't really start getting the truly fat tones until you have air under the pickups.

In fact, I think my hollow tele sounds more hollow than a 335 style.

But even a semi will get some of that fat sound going on. It really just comes down to whether you like it or not. Nugent rocks a jazz guitar pretty hard and Alex Lifeson did a huge amount of work with Rush using a 335.

It's rock n roll. There are no rules.

I played the trooper at pragestock on a 335 with no repercussions. Lol

My opinion is that semis just kill. Great guitar/amp interaction.

Yeah, with a semi, there's just a really round, woody, punchy fullness you don't get with a solidbody.

It would make a nice, low-cost addition to your arsenal :).

I like the feed back you can easily get and play with using a semi-hollow. One of my favorite things to do with my Hagstrom Vik is play around with feedback. Never rocked a hollow-body, but would love to sometime. I think I would use a hollow-body for clean, warm jazzy stuff. But then, if I could get me some Setzer skills . . .

So yeah, he should get that Artcore, or something like it.

EDIT: Here's mine:

i want this one. the gloss finish has been discontinued and the pups have obviously been changed, but this is exactly what i would go for (though maybe Dimarzio EJ Customs or TV Jones instead of GFS).

I have an AS73. My favorite rock and roll hollowbody sound is from the CUlt.

I've got two Godin 5th Avenue guitars- one with a pickup and one without. The pair is actually some of the most played guitars in my collection. Absolutely love them.

Here is my baby, my Howard Roberts Fusion. Ossum sound and great fun to play either super clean or with high gain! I originally bought this for use in a Rush tribute band besides jazz, rock, blues and everything else.
