Achtung! Sooooooooooo any of you guys interested in the international sawker cup?

I forced myself to watch this entire match. Sorry guys, It's just not my thing yet. Maybe in 4 years?

I actually enjoyed it a good bit. I pretty much only watch (American) football, have watched some playoff MLB, NBA, etc... didn't really grab me. I wouldn't be opposed to watching more soccer/futbol sometime, though I probably won't follow it too closely.

I think the only Hope the U.S. has of winning the World Cup is with the women's team.

That's more than a hope actually...

The men's squad actually showed a lot of hopeful signs this time around; if they continue to improve they could be a threat to survive deeper into the tournament in '18 and '22.

The best team won. We're satisfied with the result and happy it didn't go to kicks from the spot. That would have been dire -- since Argentina hasn't won clean since the goal in the 8th minute against Belgium...

I was really glad to see a goal. I knew it was going to be low scoring....Argentine was very good defensively especially Mascherano who was a beast. I don't know what they are saying in Argentina but they certainly should not hang this on Messi. He played well...not great but he was surrounded most of the time he touched the ball. His teammates had the opportunity to score and were unable to do so even though 2 of those chances were glorious.

And it was also nice to see that the winning goal was a good one, very nicely done as well.

I was pulling for Argentina, or more for Messi. He is my daughter's favorite player and he seems to be a pretty classy player. In the end, the better team won. Germany was definitely the most complete team in the tournament.

How the hell did Messi win best player of the tournament? Utter bullshit

It almost seemed like they were mocking him for a lackluster performance in the final.

Although, as pointed out above, it isn't like he played terribly, even if he did come up empty in the goals department.

He did have quite a good tournament actually, but no he shouldn't have won this one, dropped off quite a bit after the group stages.
He's probably set the bar impossibly high for himself though after his performances on club level the last few years.

He really does seem to be a wizard in handling the ball in traffic. And obviously has great speed. I also appreciate that he doesn't seem to be a big attention whore.

Best player there has been since Maradona - quite an undisputable fact that. His ball control and vision is ridiculous.
Needs the team around him to work though (which he has had in Barcelona for several years), they'd probably done much better with Higuain, Aguero and Di Maria all fit and in form. Higuain in particular wasted some glorious chances this tournament.

Messi is also great at looking like the nice guy, apparently that's all show.
Several reports the last few years that he practically runs Barcelona. If he thinks players get in his way or just isn't good enough, that player is always finished in the club quite shortly after. Quite well known he threatened to leave if Barca wouldn't get rid of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as he took way too much space for Messi's liking.

Fantastic player though, and at times he's doing a different sport than the rest out on that pitch.

Everybody knows there's only room for one lazy striker on a team...

Really, though -- they're both cut from the same cloth: Players who do absolutely nothing when the opposing team has the ball and only start running when their team takes possession.

Almost all star strikers are like that to be honest, very few exceptions. And why most of the top teams usually play with just one striker.

This thread is longer than the annual NFL threads. Who says futbol isn't popular in the USA?

And yes, I am aware that many of you are not in fact, in or from the USA. :)
